Welcome to WhitehorseWhitehorse is Yukon's capital and largest city and is located at kilometre 1476 on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. In 1950 Whitehorse was incorporated as a city and in 1953 the capital of Yukon was transferred from Dawson City to Whitehorse. The city was named after the White Horse Rapids for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse, near Miles Canyon, before the river was dammed. The city's name was originally spelled as two words, but on March 21, 1957, the Geographic Board of Canada combined them. The new divided highway leading to Whistle Bend marks a new milestone for development in Whitehorse. Because of the city's location in the Whitehorse valley, the climate is milder than other comparable northern communities. At this latitude winter days are short and summer days have 20 hours of daylight. Today, government, trade, tourism and mining are the main economic driving forces within Whitehorse. |
