Welcome to TeslinThe community of Teslin includes the Village of Teslin and an adjacent Indian Reserve in the Yukon, Canada and has a population of approximately 450. Teslin is home to the Teslin Tlingit Council First Nation, and the name Teslin is taken from the Tlingit word Teslintoo, meaning, “long narrow waters”. Teslin Lake is 92 miles long. Teslin is situated at historical Mile 804 on the Alaska Highway along Teslin Lake. The Alaska Highway brought both prosperity and change to this aboriginal population. In 1903 the Hudson's Bay Company established a small trading post at Teslin. Teslin has one of the largest Native populations in Yukon Territory and much of the community's lifehood revolves around traditional hunting, trapping and fishing, the George Johnston Museum details the life and culture of the 20th century. Tourism is playing an increasingly important role in this area and there are several businesses in Teslin that cater to the visitor. |
