Duwiseb Castle Camping Maltahohe - Namibia

This historical site and national monument is a convenient stopover when travelling from the popular Sesriem and Sossusvlei areas further south.
Built by the German Baron von Wolf for his American bride Jayta, this imposing castle situated 72 km south-west of Maltahohe dates back to 1908-9 and offers the visitor a glimpse of German colonial times.
It houses a museum with artefacts from this extravagant era brought to the then German South West Africa from Germany by ship.
Apart from being a gift of love, the Duwisib Castle was a dream turned into reality for Baron von Wolf, who planned on breeding racing horses in this semi-desert environment. Unfortunately, his dream was short lived as he was killed during the war times in Germany.
His wife returned to America, leaving the castle with most of its contents behind.
