Spitzkoppe is one of Namibia’s most spectacular desert landscapes, where towering granite peaks and dramatic rock formations rise from the open Namib Desert. Often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia”, the area is a favourite for travellers seeking scenery, tranquillity, photography, hiking and some of Africa’s finest stargazing. Visitors can explore ancient San rock paintings, discover unusual rock formations and enjoy unforgettable sunrises and sunsets against the mountains.
What you will see
Spitzkoppe Mountain
The Spitzkoppe — the name meaning “pointed dome” — is one of the iconic attractions of Namibia, and no visit to this beautiful country should exclude a trip to this breathtaking site.
Rising dramatically out of the plains of the Namib Desert, the tallest of the three main peaks towers above the rest of the range at 1,784 m above sea level.
When travelling between Windhoek and Swakopmund the mountains are visible to the north, but viewing them from the main road is just not enough.
To truly experience the magic of this volcanic upheaval — caused by geological activity 130 million years ago — you need to go closer: take photographs at sunset, and hike at sunrise.
