Vilanculos Mozambique

Vilanculos offers a wealth of water sport activities. The activity centre at Archipelago Resort can book almost anything under the sun as long as it involves the ocean.Take a relaxing dhow trip to the smaller islands or try your hand at windsurfing. Fishing is also a popular activity with diving and snorkelling being the most common and loved activity in Vilanculos.

Vilanculos has no shortage of shops although it is still nothing like what a very small town in South Africa can offer you. Fruit and vegetables can be bought on the side of the road in the market as well as bread and some other necessities. Vilanculos is home to one of only two Taurus Supermarkets in Mozambique.

Although the shop is pricey the produce is of high standard and you can buy from red meat to chocolate bars in this small shop. Another whole sale style supermarket opened in Vilanculos a few years ago. This shop is not really for tourists though and is aimed at the local and local traders. Fuel is readily available in Vilanculos.

Vilanculos is home to some of the best accommodation that Mozambique has to offer. Many of these lodges have in house restaurants open to their own guests and general members of the public. Apart from the in house restaurants, Vilanculos also has a number of smaller bar-like restaurants.

Whenever near the ocean, be on the lookout for the dugongs, these gentle giants used to swim freely around the islands of the Bazaruto, grazing on the sea grass fields of the shallows. Unfortunately a combination of Dugong fishing and a terrible hurricane a few years ago has basically wiped out the Dugong population. There are still a few Dugongs around but tourists do not really get to see them. Should you encounter them on a swim or a dive we ask you not to harass these shy creatures as we will certainly chase them away for good.

Film crews and photographers still visit the Bazaruto islands in hope to see the gentle Dugongs. Encounters are hard to come by but they certainly do happen and when they do it makes it so much more magical.
