The stay

Rebuilt, and half the size it was

Rostock Ritz is not the lodge it was. Acquired by a new owner in 2025 and given a comprehensive revamp from January 2026, it now has eleven chalets rather than nineteen rooms — each one roughly double its old size.

The distinctive cave-like igloo architecture remains, designed by Piet Odendaal when the lodge was built in 1998, but the interiors are new. Every chalet has a private panoramic terrace overlooking the desert waterhole, full air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a digital safe, a custom minibar and a coffee and tea station.

The lodge runs entirely on its own solar system, around the clock. There is an infinity pool looking across the plains to the Rostock Mountains, a west-facing boma for sunsets and the Milky Way, and the only fine-dining à la carte restaurant in the region.

What to do

Why stay at Rostock Ritz?

For silence and space. The lodge sits high above the plains in open Namib wilderness, and since the 2026 rebuild there are only eleven chalets on it. Each has its own terrace over the waterhole, full air conditioning and an uninterrupted horizon.

The food is a genuine differentiator: this is the only fine-dining à la carte restaurant in the region, which in a part of Namibia where most lodges serve a set menu is worth knowing. The infinity pool looks across the plains to the Rostock Mountains, and the west-facing boma is built for sunset and then the Milky Way.

There is also more to walk here than almost anywhere nearby: ten marked hiking trails, from short strolls to serious treks, plus a 4x4 excursion to rock paintings reckoned to be over a thousand years old.

Now the honest part, and it matters. Rostock Ritz is 140 km from Sossusvlei — this is not a Sossusvlei base. It works beautifully as a stop between Swakopmund and the dunes, or as a destination in its own right. If you want to be at the dunes for sunrise, Sossus Dune Lodge is inside the gate and Moon Mountain is far closer, and we will say so.

From Rotstock to Rostock

The farm was originally named Rotstock, after the red gneiss mountains along its northern boundary. It lost the letter “t” during a farm division in the 1960s and has been Rostock ever since. The lodge itself was built in 1998 by the hotelier Wolfgang “Kücki” Kühhirt and designed by Piet Odendaal; the igloo structures are his.
