The stay

A working farm, and an honest price

Sachsenheim has been in the Sachse family since 1946 and is still a working farm. The accommodation grew out of that rather than replacing it, which is why the welcome and the cooking feel like someone’s home rather than a product.

There are twenty-two standard rooms, four luxury rooms and two family rooms, all with top-quality mattresses and en-suite bathrooms, plus six campsites on green lawn and four private campsites with their own ablutions. Room rates include breakfast.

On the farm there is a waterhole that antelope, giraffe and a good spread of birds come in to, a swimming pool, a bonfire area, and a bar stocked with South African wines alongside the farm buffet.

Standard Room

Twenty-two standard rooms, and the reason most people find Sachsenheim — this is about as affordable as a proper room gets near Etosha.
Twin single beds that convert to a double, with top-quality mattresses, in a spacious room with an African-inspired feel.
Mosquito nets, a fan, tea and coffee making facilities, an en-suite bathroom and a mini bar.

Four luxury rooms, air-conditioned, with twin or double beds and a more finished feel than the standard rooms.
An African-inspired ambiance, top-quality beds, an en-suite bathroom, a mini bar, a safe and tea and coffee making facilities.

Family Room

Two family rooms, each furnished with five single beds — two of which convert to a double — sleeping up to five.
Mosquito nets, fans, tea and coffee making facilities, an en-suite bathroom and a mini bar.

There are only two, so ask well ahead. Note the farm’s own booking form states no children under 12 in the family unit — we will confirm the current policy with them before quoting you, so tell us the ages of your party.

Four private campsites, each with its own private ablution rather than a shared block — which at camping rates is unusual anywhere in Namibia.

Six campsites on lush, green lawn, sharing ablution facilities with hot water.
Power points and braai facilities at each, and green grass, which after a week on Namibian gravel is worth more than it sounds.
The pool, the bar and the farm restaurant are all open to campers.

What to do

Why stay at Sachsenheim?

Price and position. Sachsenheim is minutes from the Von Lindequist Gate on Etosha’s eastern side, and it is among the most affordable places to sleep anywhere near the park. Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, so being close to one matters.

It is also a real working farm rather than a lodge dressed as one, and it has been in the same family for three generations. Hermann Sachse bought the land in 1946, built a house by hand and dug a sixty-metre borehole; the name means “home of the Sachse family”. His son repurchased it in 1987 and has run it since. The line they use is his father’s: you come as a guest and leave as a friend.

There is a waterhole on the farm where antelope, giraffe and a good range of birds come in, a swimming pool, a bonfire area, and a bar stocked with South African wine. The farm buffet is the kind of cooking you get on a farm rather than in a kitchen designed by a group.

What you do not get here is a floodlit waterhole inside the park — Okaukuejo is the one for that, and Namutoni is the in-park camp on this side. Sachsenheim is the budget base, and an honest one.

  • Wi-Fi is free but only at the pool area, and the signal is limited elsewhere on the farm

  • The farm drive is bookable in advance and includes a sundowner drink
  • Trailers, caravans and motorhomes are charged a small daily extra at the campsites
  • Park entry fees for Etosha are payable separately at the gate
