The stay

Where comfort meets wilderness

In Oshiwambo, Mondjila means “to be on your way”, and that is exactly the job this place does — a comfortable, sensibly priced overnight stop half an hour from the Andersson Gate for travellers heading to or from Etosha.

The old safari tents have been upgraded to en-suite rooms, each with a private deck looking out over the mopane. There are eleven twin rooms, two family rooms sleeping five, and eight grassed campsites, so a group travelling in different styles can stay together.

The camp sits on an elevated viewpoint, with a restaurant and a handcrafted wooden bar looking out over the bush, and a swimming pool set among natural bushland. Breakfast and dinner are generous buffets built on locally sourced ingredients.

Safari Room

Eleven twin en-suite rooms — these replaced the old safari tents, so if you stayed here before, this is a different proposition.
Twin single beds with bedding, an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower and complimentary toiletries, mosquito nets and a freestanding fan.
Each room has its own private deck looking out over the mopane and the bush.
There is an in-room coffee station for the morning.

Dinner, bed and breakfast have traditionally been included in the nightly rate here — worth confirming when you enquire, as the camp has recently rebuilt.

Family Room

Two spacious family rooms sleeping up to five, with a partitioned layout so parents and children have their own space without booking two rooms.
En-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and hot water, complimentary toiletries, a hairdryer, mosquito nets and a water cooler fan.
There is a flatscreen television with satellite channels, a seating area, and a private veranda with the same long bush views.
Parking is right outside the room, which with a loaded car and tired children is worth more than it sounds.

Campsite

Eight grassed campsites, spacious and set among the trees.
Each has power points, lighting and braai facilities. Two shared ablution blocks serve the sites, with warm water showers.
Campers use the lodge alongside — the restaurant, the rustic bar and the swimming pool are all open to you.

Bring your own tent and camping gear. Breakfast and dinner can be booked at the restaurant, and breakfast packs or lunch packs arranged if you are heading into Etosha early.

What to do

Why stay at Mondjila?

The name tells you what it is for. In Oshiwambo, Mondjila means “to be on your way” — and thirty kilometres south of the Andersson Gate, seventy kilometres north of Outjo, this is a stopover built for people travelling to or from Etosha rather than a destination in itself.

It does that job well and at a sensible price. Eleven twin rooms, two family rooms and eight grassed campsites on one property, so a mixed group stays together. The camp sits on an elevated viewpoint, which makes the sunsets from the deck the thing people mention afterwards.

The kitchen matters more than it usually does at this price. Breakfast and dinner are generous buffets of Namibian cooking and international dishes, made with locally sourced ingredients, and light lunches, breakfast packs and lunch packs can all be arranged.

Thirty kilometres means the gate is about half an hour away, and as everywhere outside the park it opens at sunrise. If a night at a floodlit waterhole inside the park is the point of your trip, Okaukuejo is the answer and we will say so.
