Etosha · 25 km from the Andersson Gate

Toshari Campsite

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Three campsites on a green lawn under mopane trees, twenty-five kilometres from the Andersson Gate. Each has its own private ablution with hot water, a power point and a braai, with the lodge pools and restaurant alongside.

The stay

Three sites, and a bathroom of your own

Camping near Etosha usually means a shared ablution block. Toshari has three sites and each one has its own private bathroom with hot and cold water, which at camping rates is unusual anywhere in Namibia.

The sites sit on a green lawn under mopane trees, with electric lighting, a 220V power outlet and a braai area at each, and firewood supplied. Up to five people per site.

Campers use the lodge alongside: three swimming pools, the restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the bar with its long wine list, and the garden with its chess and checkers tables. Guided game drives into Etosha leave from here.

Private Campsite

Only three campsites, set on a green lawn under shade trees.
The thing that makes them unusual is that each site has its own private ablution with hot and cold water — no shared block, which is rare at this price anywhere in Namibia.
Each site also has electric lighting, a 220V power outlet and braai facilities, and firewood is supplied.
A maximum of five people per site. Campers are welcome to use the lodge facilities — the pools, the bar and the restaurant.

Three sites is not many. If you are planning around this one, book it early.

Standard Room

Eighteen comfortable, spacious rooms for two people.
The en-suite bathroom has a shower, a hairdryer and bathrobes. Inside there is a safe, air-conditioning and a tea and coffee station, with mosquito gauze at the windows.
A small seating area on the patio outside lets you sit out with a drink at the end of the day.

With eighteen of them these are the easiest rooms here to get at short notice.

Standard Family Room

Three family rooms furnished with a mix of beds — a double and three singles — so a family can spread out without booking two rooms.
Same specification as the standard rooms otherwise: en-suite bathroom with a shower, hairdryer and bathrobes, safe, air-conditioning, tea and coffee station and a patio seating area.

There are only three, so ask early if you are travelling as a family in high season.

Luxury Room

Eight luxury rooms, each with its own terrace and set for maximum privacy.
More space and better finishes than the standard rooms, with a hairdryer and bathrobes among the amenities, plus coffee and tea making facilities and a small fridge.
En-suite bathroom with a hot water shower, a safe and air-conditioning.

The step up here is privacy and the terrace as much as the fittings.

Luxury Family Room

Four spacious family rooms with a double bed and two single beds, sleeping up to four.
They come with coffee and tea making facilities and a small fridge, an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower, a hairdryer and bathrobes, plus a safe and air-conditioning.

Four rooms, so worth asking well ahead in the dry season.

What to do

Why stay at Toshari?

Twenty-five kilometres from the Andersson Gate on the C38, so Etosha is half an hour away. As everywhere outside the park, the gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, and the waterholes are busiest at both ends of the day — so the drive to the gate comes off your best game-viewing hour. If a night at a floodlit waterhole is the point of your trip, the camps inside the park are the answer and we will say so; Okaukuejo is the one most people want.

What Toshari offers instead is a genuinely pleasant place to come back to, at a price that undercuts most of what is nearer the gate. It sits under a dolomite outcrop in mopane and white seringa forest, which means real shade, and there are three swimming pools for the hours when the park is quiet anyway.

It is also the greenest operation on this road by some distance: entirely solar powered, off-grid, with solar geysers, its own vegetable garden and refuse recycling. If that matters to you, it is worth knowing that here it is the whole system rather than a sign in the bathroom.

Guided game drives into Etosha run from the lodge, with packed lunches available, and you are welcomed with a complimentary drink on arrival — a small thing that people mention.
