Camping, with none of the setting up

Self-drive travellers in Namibia usually choose between hiring a 4x4 with a rooftop tent and all the gear, or paying lodge rates every night. Camping2Go sits between the two. The tent is up, the beds are made and the kitchen is stocked, so you can arrive in an ordinary car with a cool box and nothing more.

Each tent has four single beds and its own en-suite bathroom with a shower, which is the part that separates this from a campsite. Outside there is a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge, a gas cooker, a water cooler and seating, plus a braai and a firepit. The lawns are kept green and mopane trees give shade through the summer.

The restaurant and bar are the social heart of the place and unlike anything else near Etosha. Themed as an African shebeen and hung with old artefacts, with an old train carriage converted into a dining room, a courtyard, fireplaces and live music from local musicians most evenings. Gondwana calls the whole thing the Place of Legends, and it is a good deal more fun than the hush of a camp restaurant.

Camping2Go Safari Tent

A permanent safari tent, already pitched on green lawn under mopane trees, with four single beds made up and bedding and towels provided.
It has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower — no walking to a shared block in the dark.
Outside there is a fully equipped kitchen with seating, a fridge, a gas cooker and a water cooler, plus braai facilities, a veranda and a firepit.

Four beds makes this good value for a family or two couples. Bring your own food and drink; firewood is sold on the premises. This is a pet-free facility.

What to do

Why stay at Camping2Go?

Mostly cost and convenience. Four beds in one tent with its own bathroom works out well below four people in chalets, and you still get the pool, the restaurant and the activities. Nothing to pitch, nothing to pack down.

Etosha rewards early starts and late afternoons. Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, and the waterholes are busiest at both ends of the day, so every kilometre between your bed and the gate comes off your best game-viewing hour. Ten kilometres is about as short as that run gets.

The one thing staying outside cannot give you is a floodlit waterhole after dark. Those belong to the rest camps inside the park. If that is what you are after, say so when you enquire and we will tell you honestly what it costs and how far ahead you need to book.

Getting into the park

Half-day guided game drive — morning departure about 30 minutes before sunrise, or an afternoon run from around 14:00. Five to six hours, with snacks and refreshments
Full-day guided game drive — about nine hours, leaving 30 minutes before sunrise
Self-drive — park roads are fine for a normal car, and the gate is ten minutes away
Etosha Safari Mobil — a seven-seater Kombi adapted for game viewing, rentable for an unguided trip. A driver can be booked at extra cost
Guided walk on the property, 2 to 3.5 km through the mopane woods, with refreshments
