About Camarines Sur and the Bicol Region
Camarines Sur is one of the provinces which makes up "Bicolandia",
found at the southern tip of the island of Luzon.
The region of Bicol is full of volcanoes, beaches, caverns,
coves, lakes, parks and other natural wonders making it a prime destination
for adventurers.
Although the capital of the Bicol region and home the nearest airport
is Naga City, the traveler friendly resorts in Camarines Sur
make it the perfect base for exploring the region of Bicol including the
islands of Caramoan and Albay which
were put on the world adventure map by the popular TV shows Survivor and
The Amazing Race .
Albay is home to the Mayon Volcano National Park, as
its name suggests "Mount Mayon" is an active volcano, which
is actually an active volcano to this day. The lesser known islands are
just as enchanting, and other attractions of the region include the whale
sharks (butanding) at Dorsal and wind and kitesurfing
at Bagasbas Beach in Daet. Watersports are not isn’t
recommended during the rainy season (November to January), so aim to visit
in summer (February to June) which is also a great time to visit one of
the many beaches in the region.
The people of Bicol are a mix of laid back & outspoken who are very
proud of their centuries old stone churches and enjoy holding water parades.
The most awaited celebration of Bicol each year is the Penafrancia
Festival -held on the third week of September in honor of Our
Lady of Penafrancia. Her centuries old image becomes an object of a stirring
religious event which is the ceremonial fluvial procession.
Other festivals include the Voyadores Festival which
is a street dance reenactment on the transfer of the image of Our Lady
of Penafrancia from the Basilica to the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the
Lagonoy Festival held every 1st day of May celebrating
the town fiesta in honor to the patron saint's St.Phillip and St.James.
The highlight of Lagonoy is to promote the town's best products and native
foods.
Bicolanos are noted for their fiery or chili-hot dishes and relish thier
spicy specialities.
Access to the area is by land or air. There are 3 or 4 flights a day
to Naga Airport from Manila. By land the optiosn include the slow train
(10 to 12 hours) or bus (8 hours) from Manila.
Once you arrive in Naga City, you can roam around the Naga City on foot.
Buses, vans and Jeepneys will connect you to Camarines Sur. For all areas
jeepneys, tricycles and trisikad (pedal powered mini cabs) are the main
modes of transport.
