Bathurst Information Guide

Bathurst is situated on the fringes of both the Sunshine Coast and Frontier Country, a scenic half hour drive on the R67 from Grahamstown or 10 minutes from Port Alfred, half way between Port Elizabeth and East London on the R72
Also, with it's glorious beaches, restaurants, shops, the renowned Royal Alfred Golf Course and water sport orientated activities are close by. So is the Fish River Sun with it's Golf Course designed by Gary Player. It is in close proximity to malaria free game parks and reserves.
Bristling with memories of days gone by,and historical happenings still lingering in the air, this little town in the Eastern Cape with it's beautiful indigenous trees such as the giant wild fig trees and the brilliantly colored Coral trees which predominate will remind one that this is still Africa
Today Bathurst brings together the past and the present, being the mecca of pineapple industry in South Africa

The most famous `sighting` in Bathurst is, however, The Pineapple Building.

It stands 16.7m high and has 3 floors. It is constructed out of a fibre glass outer skin covering a steel and concrete superstructure
The ground floor has a gift shop where `once-upon-a-time` stuff such as jams and chutneys, locally made pottery and puzzles as well as t-shirts and hats (to name a few of the items) can be taken home!

The 1st floor has tourist information and static displays of the Pineapple Story. A must visit for kids doing school projects

The 2nd floor has a continuous DVD on the Eastern Cape pineapple industry and leads up to the observation deck with magnificent 360°views over rolling farm lands to the Indian Ocean.

Pineapple at Bathurst

The horseshoe bend-There is an outstanding view of bush covered valleys where the Kowie River loops in a horse shoe. Another 3 km down a steep winding road you will can picnic and relax under the trees at the waters edge. Canoe trails available

Another sight for sore eyes would be the Wesleyan Chapel – it was built by Samuel Bradshaw and opened in 1832, it was besieged in the Frontier Wars. It is also where the famous family bible of Jeremiah Goldswain's are being kept. Church services are still being held on Sundays. It is a National Monument and epitomizes many of the other Wesleyan churches in the rural areas
Not to miss is the St John's Anglican Church which is the oldest unaltered Anglican church in South Africa. It was a safe haven in the Frontier Wars of 1834, 1846 and 1851 for hundreds of Settlers. The opening service was held on the 1st January 1838. Be on the watch out for the`church mouse` on the west wall.

At last there is the well known toposcope. It is a hand crafted monument erected on hills or high places which indicates the direction, and usually the distance, to notable features which can be seen . In this case it marks the spot where the 1820 British Settlers locations were surveyed. 57 bronze plaques record details of settlements. On a clear day you can see from The Great Fish River to Kwaaihoek. The stones in the wall are taken from ruins of original Settler homes. There are still quite a few of the original Settler Homes on working farms, rambling but otherwise going klopdisselboom!
