& more tranquil Scenic Season period, when accommodation is more readily
available and special rates are offered by most establishments.
The many mild & sunny days are perfect for simply lazing on the beach,
or for taking long walks along the stretches of pristine beach that the
region is well known for.
Or perhaps you’d prefer to embark on something more exhilarating,
such as a beach, forest, or mountain hike. It is little known fact that
the Garden Route’s lowest rainfalls occur during the months of June
& July.
The region has a temperate climate throughout the year & winters are
generally mild, with average temperatures in the 20’s.
Explore one of the many lagoons and lakes, or lose yourself in nature
amid the grandeur of giant yellowwood or milkwood trees in on of the indigenous
forests.
The bright flash of a wing could alert you to the sight of a shy Knysna
Loerie - or one of the approximately 250 other species of bird making
the region such a prime destination for bird lovers.
This is also the time of year that the gentle giants of the sea, the
Southern Right Whales come to play in our waters.
Each year Southern right Whales migrate into the waters of Southern to
calve & nurse their young. Meters from the shore they provide unsurpassed
whale-watching opportunities. A total of 37 species of whales & dolphins
frequent the Southern African waters.
CAPE NATURE CONSERVATION controls some TEN NATURE RESERVES
in the area, stretching form Plettenberg Bay in the east through George,
over the Outeniqua Mountain Range into the Little Karoo (Swartberg) &
then right through to the Anysberg Nature Reserve some 60km outside Ladysmith.
The most popular coastal reserves are Keurbooms, Robberg, Goukamma Marine
Reserve & Outeniqua's north of George & Mossel Bay.
ROBBERG: Spectacular sight-seeing at this reserve
near Plettenberg Bay, with many picnic areas and various walks. Rock angling
is permissible, but fishing within the marine reserve boundaries is not
allowed.
KEURBOOMS NATURE RESERVE: The river is strictly
zoned as a conservation area, and skiing is only allowed on a limited
part of the river. Canoes may be hired in order to paddle up the river
to the overnight hut.
MARINE RESERVES: Marine reserves are established
for the protection of a wide variety of marine organisms as well as sandy
beaches, dunes and estuaries.
Estuaries are important areas for certain fish species which, at an
early stage, derive essential food from plant material in salt marshes.
No marine organisms (bait) may be collected from the inter-tidal zone,
so shore-anglers are requested to bring their own bait when organising
a fishing trip.
Also NO angling from boats is allowed within one nautical mile from the
coastline. All these regulations are in place to protect the marine life
and to ensure a sustainable resource for future generations

Mountain Biking:
The Garden route is known for its ideal conditions for different sports
and the exhilarating possibilities for mountain bikes make this no exception.
One could get lost for days pedaling along the dirt roads in the Geelhoutboom
area. The roads are generally flat & well maintained & the views
of the farms & mountain are quite magnificent.
Try cycling along the dirt roads in the Wilderness Lakes area going from
Island Lake towards Sedgefield. Two rides are available in the municipal
forest around the George Dam.
Paragliding:
PARAGLIDING is a popular sport around George, with some beautiful possibilities
for coastal flying. From the jumping platform at the Holiday Inn to the
dunes at Kleinkrantz, there is something for the beginner to the most
skilled paragliders.
A spectacular view awaits the paraglider taking off at Wilderness Heights.
The local club is SKYWINGS and they go flying as regular as the wind allows.
It is imperative that paragliders be in possession of the proper qualifications
before they use any of the jumps along the coast.
4X4 Eco Bound:
Well organised 4x4 trips to remote areas where nature is left untouched,
and off-the beaten-track destinations that are only accessible by off-road
vehicles.
