Bo La Motte is an ideal location to make a base, from which to travel and see the delights of the immediate area and Western Cape and when you've finished driving, it offers the space to relax and unwind. A day spent on the farm can involve a stroll into the village to indulge in the delights offered by Franschhoek's culinary masters or you can buy your own delights at one of the many village shops and enjoy a picnic around the dams, taking in the breathtaking scenery offered by the surrounding mountains.

Bo La Motte Farm

At the foot of the Middagkrans mountain and only a ten-minute walk from the beautiful village of Franschhoek, lies Bo La Motte Farm; one of the nine historic Huguenot wine farms settled in 1672. The farm was returned to its 'Wine Farm' origins in 2001 and planted with Rhone varietal vines. The grapes (red and white) are processed in the restored 50 tonne wine cellar and the resulting boutique wine is marketed under the Four Pawslabel. In addition to this, the farm also offers beautifully furnished, self-catering cottages, each in its own unique setting.

For those not wanting to spend their time in the car, but who have an adventurous streak, Franschhoek valley also offers a number of activities such as horse riding, paragliding, helicopter trips and mountain biking or for a more relaxing theme there is fly-fishing, walking trails, wine tasting and numerous health spas for the ultimate pamper sessions; choose your fancy and let us help you organise it.

So, whatever your preference, there really is something in Franschhoek for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you to the heart of the Cape Winelands and Bo La Motte Farm’s self-catering cottages.

Farming Activities
When Jennie and Maarten took over the farm it was largely in a state of neglect, with very little farming activity taking place. At that time the only crops were from small plum, pear and nectarine orchards, whilst the only grapevines consisted of a newly-planted block of Cabernet Sauvignon and some very old table-grape vines.

The fruit orchards were uprooted, together with the table-grapes and shortly after, the task of establishing new vineyards began. Not knowing much about farming Maarten and Jennie’s task was daunting, but with a little help and advice they set to work, planting Shiraz, Mouvedre, Grenache and Viognier, in order to complement the existing block of Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties were chosen as they are ideally suited to grow in the Rhone valley, France, - a climate similar to that of Franschhoek. The new vines have grown fantastically and 2006 saw the first harvest from the newly-planted blocks.

The Winery
A small winery was constructed on the farm in the late 19th/early 20th century. However, due to a change in farming operations, the building was later converted into a fruit-packing store. Maarten has undertaken the restoration of the cellar, which has so far taken many painstaking hours. This is due in part to the fact that the building was constructed with 9-inch walls!

The first harvest from the existing Cabernet Sauvignon vines happened in 2004, from which, 3,000 bottles were produced. The winery is managed by acclaimed winemaker Gerda Willers and the wine is branded under the "Four Paws" logo (www.fourpawswines.co.za). It was unfortunately not possible to name the wine after the farm because of it's close association with the farm La Motte.
