Fort Dauphin Madagascar
Built on a headland, and bordered on three sides by the Indian Ocean,
Fort Dauphin is a town with much historical importance and significance
to Madagascar's colonial past.
It is a fascinating town to visit as well, with old forts, colonial architecture
and a bustling marketplace, surrounded by some stunning scenery of mountains,
lakes, beaches and coastline.
Fort Dauphin has much of interest for those interested in both culture
and nature.
Nahampoana
Reserve
A few minutes from town, this is a lovely residence in an exotic park
- visit, or stay and have breakfast with the lemurs!
·
Former "Garden of acclimatization" of species useful to Madagascar,
this 67 hectare garden, at the foot of the St Louis peak, is also planted
with many endemic plants. Introduced are several species of lemurs, tortoises,
chameleons and crocodiles. River trips are also available. Two dwelling
houses and a good restaurant accommodate guests.
The services which you will remember longest are those of the ecotourism
guides, who will help you discover different lemurs species, Makis, brown
lemurs, Cattas…and the many endemic plants (among
which include didieraceas, cacti-shaped trees). But the service of the
restaurant and the rooms is also very attentive and always smiling.

Vinanibe
Lodge

divided into 15 rooms.
Jean de Heaulmes
The de Heaulmes, having come from Reunion Island in 1925 to exploit sisal
and mica in the Malagasy south, got in the hotel industry by accident,
before the independence when a lady sold them her guesthouse. They developed
a small network of hotels, with standard 2 stars in the bush, and three
stars downtown
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues
(whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively
to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays
a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
The SHTM is a family company committed to sustainable tourism and social
development.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The de Heaulmes have initiated numerous pioneering sustainable tourism
projects. Starting in 1937, they opened a private reserve in the forest
of the Mandradre river, now of world renown and featuring an Atandroy
museum. They also safeguard the vestiges of Fort Flacourt, those of the
Portuguese fort in the small island of Santa Cruz, the botanical garden
of Sayadi, and also a large forest of baobab trees close to Morondave.
On a social level, their effort is "foremost to explain, and involve
people in their own future", says Jean de Heaulme. It is also to
develop local employment: the family hire very few westerners among the
executives (70% of them come from Tana, 30% from Fort Dauphin), and they
have an 50/50 objective. In 1986, the family was awarded the John Paul
Getty Prize for Conservation.
Berenty Lodge
Located inside the reserve, the hotel offers 29 rooms or bungalows within
an unique natural setting, which has been well preserved. All rooms rates
are half-board pension. [more info]

Set in a large garden, this villa has been
enlarged over the years, and is now a hotel full of character
and with great service.
Lost in exuberant vegetation, and built in several stages,
the white buildings of the Dolphin call to mind a comfortable
residence where one can quietly wander under the large trees,
observing birds and rare orchids.
Great restaurant in two pleasant rooms, including an open
walled one in the heart of the garden. Other facilities include
a bar with TV lounge, cafeteria, boutique, conference room
(seats 35), laundry, lugggage service and ticketing.
