Waianuhea is centrally located on the Big Island of Hawaii, halfway between Kona and Hilo on the slopes of beautiful Mauna Kea. Nestled at the 2500-foot elevation on the lush rural Hamakua coast, we offer the discerning traveller a different perspective of life in Hawaii.

After a full day of sightseeing on the island, Waianuhea provides a cool welcome home. Often in the afternoon the Waianuhea (fragrant mountain mist) will envelope the land in beauty and mystery. Waianuhea is well-suited for weddings, small retreats, corporate meetings and workshops. Our Great Room, extra half baths and spacious relaxation area with a treatment room and large solar heated spa make an ideal setting for any event.

Escape to the serenity that is Waianuhea. Enjoy the views of the summit of Mauna Kea above and magnificent Pacific Ocean below. Spend the day on the grounds with many beautiful spots for a lazy picnic. Quiet country back roads make for great bike rides and long walks or explore nearby old Honokaa Town with its western charm.

A'ala

A'ala lives up to its name: it is our sweet yet royal room, decorated in a different style than the rest of the bedrooms. A hand painted wrought iron queen bed is the centerpiece of this delightful little room. Shades of lavender and blue grace the walls of the bedroom as well as the bath. A view of the ocean as well as one of the pond can be seen from A'ala's windows. This room has the distinction of having its own private entry stairway as well as access from inside the house.

Li'oli'o

Li'ol'io is full of light and airiness with its shades of gold and yellow. A four-poster cherry king bed, two armchairs and a gas fireplace make this a most comfortable room. Li'oli'o has a balcony that faces the ocean or makai side. One of the favourite features of this room is the bathroom with its large soaking tub (big enough for two!) and open shower. Li'oli'o is the most private room in the main house.

Malamalama

Malamalama is the largest room in the main house. It is a king junior suite complete with cherry sleigh bed, an armchair (which the owner calls her favorite chair in the house) and a twin sleeper sofa. The furnishings are shades of deep green, while the walls are a lighter green topped by a surprising sky blue ceiling. The bath is done in white tile with blue-green rope tile trim and features a large soaking tub, a glass-enclosed shower and a separate water closet. There are lovely views from all windows of this room: to the east is the lilypond, to the south is the top of Mauna Kea on a clear day and to the north is the beautiful blue Pacific.

kaulana Akea

Kaulana Akea is our full suite. It is located out of the main section of the house thus providing the most privacy. It has a bedroom with a king bed and a living room with a queen sleeper sofa making it ideal for a family or several adults traveling together. A gas-burning stove warms the suite on chilly nights. There is a private patio area with outdoor furniture, fenced by elegant lava rock, featuring a brand-new two-person spa.

Directions to Waianuhea LLC

From Hilo

Leaving airport, go to highway 11 and turn right. Travel almost a mile and then turn left at Kamehameha Ave. Watch for signs that say "To Honokaa". Turn right at Pauahi Street and then an almost immediate left onto bay front Drive (highway 19). Take highway 19 north towards Honokaa. Take the first Ahualoa turn (left) across from Tex Drive-In, just before the 43-mile marker. (Mauna Loa Street) Make an immediate right onto Mamalahoa highway. Go for just over 1.2 miles. Take the first left with a street sign - Kalehua road. (If you see a bank of mailboxes on your right, you've just passed Kalehua.) Stay on Kalehua until it ends at a "T" intersection with Kahana. Drive, approximately 1.5 miles. (Stay on the paved road. There is an unpaved road that connects into Kalehua from the left about halfway up. Don't take that turn.) Kahana is clearly marked with a street sign. There will be a green water tank straight ahead as your landmark. Turn left onto Kahana and travel for approximately 0.3 mile. Our street address is 45-3503 Kahana Road and is posted at the bottom of the paved driveway. Come to the upper house and you've arrived!
