Licuala Lodge

Licuala Lodge

Licuala Lodge is situated in between North Mission Beach and Wongaling Beach (the other two villages that make up Mission Beach being Bingil Bay and South Mission Beach). We are approx 1.5 kms from the beach, and the same sort of distance from the nearest shops and restaurants. One of the things that will knock you out about the Lodge is the peace and serenity. Have a gentle stroll around our grounds of this Mission Beach accommodation and be amazed at our collection of our native plants and shrubs, our gingers, our heliconias, our bromeliads and all our other exotic tropical plants.

We have several passionfruit vines that do really well, pineapples, pawpaws and several species of citrus fruit. And whilst strolling around, if you feel the need to mow the lawn then you are more than welcome to make use of our ride-on mower. And of course you may bump into a Cassowary or two. We have an adult male and female that visit the Lodge on a regular basis. If you have not seen this magnificent and sadly endangered bird, then the Lodge is your big chance.

Queen Rooms

The buildings here are all built in that unique Queensland timber pole style, and have queen size beds and are fully ensuite, with ceiling fan, free-standing fan, fridge, alarm clock, hairdryer, a teddy bear, and of course complimentary toiletries. The shower is a nice big size with shower door - not one of those horrible shower curtains. The doors and windows are fully screened. We can add an extra bed to sleep an extra adult or child, but the King Suite is much better suited for three people.

King Suite

The King Suite is part of the main house and has panoramic views of the garden and the pool. It is ideally suited for 2 or 3 adults. The bedroom has a king size bed, ensuite bathroom with separate shower and bath, private verandah, ceiling fan, free-standing fan, alarm clock, hairdryer, two teddy bears and complimentary toiletries. The shower is a big size with shower door - not shower curtains. All the doors and windows are fully screened. The King Suite has a separate lounge room, complete with a sofa bed, LCD TV, larger fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, ceiling fan and another two teddy bears. The fridge always has proper fresh milk, and Sue will make sure that there are some cookies or muffins in the cookie jar.

Directions to Licuala Lodge

From Cairns Travel South out of Cairns - signposted Innisfail and/or Townsville. Just after an hour of travelling through this delightful part of Tropical North Queensland (lots of bananas and sugar cane fields) you will arrive at the fairly large town of Innisfail (well, large by Queensland standards). Drive through the town and straight on at the roundabout. Then just under 1 km make a right turn (signposted Tully) in order to stay on the Bruce Highway. After about 40 minutes or so, you should come across the township of El Arish, and there is a left turn for Mission Beach. Follow the road (for about 14 kms) and eventually on your right a few shops will appear including a Mitre 10 Hardware store (painted bright blue), then an AutoSpares Shop, and approx 100 metres beyond the shops is a major right turning. It should be signposted Wongaling Beach, South Mission Beach and Tully (but at present the signage is missing !!). Take this right turn, and about one km on the right is Mission Circle - just after a big roadsign (on the left) for our wonderful Mission Beach Accommodation. Simple! If you come across the Woolworths roundabout - you have gone too far.

If you are arriving late and your stomach is rumbling and you like Italian style food, there is an excellent restaurant called Roscoe's Piazza just as you are about to leave Innisfail on the left hand side, just before the big roundabout. Restaurants in Mission Beach tend to call last orders around 9pm, and Roscoe's is great place to eat.

From Townsville Townsville to Licuala Lodge. It should keep you amused or occupied, or better still if you have got kids it may even keep them amused and occupied. It is a 2.5 hour drive North on the Bruce Highway. Roughly halfway, you will pass Hinchinbrook Island on your right (if the island is on your left, you are in big trouble). Just after the town of Tully there is a right turn for Mission Beach. Keep your eyes open for the Gumboot tree on the right which should be in full flower. Stay on that road for approx 22 kms and then you'll come to a roundabout. Woolworths should be on the right. Mission Circle is third left past the roundabout (approx 1km), just after a big yellow roadsign for Licuala Lodge on the left. Too Easy.

Something else to look out for on the Tully-Mission Beach road is a tree that we locals call 'The Bikini Tree'. It is on the left hand side about 10 kms after you leave the highway.
Oh and as you approach Mission Beach there is a brown road sign on the left with the word LICUALA - that is NOT our place, it is the Licuala State Forest. And if you do turn down there, you won't be the first, and I'm sure you won't be the last.

Now if you have got 10 minutes to spare, just take a quick look in Tully. You will probably know that in Oz there are lots of 'big things' (ie the big banana, big melon, big cow, big sheep etc.. Well, Tully has got a big GUMBOOT. It stands 8 metres tall and you can climb inside it all the way to the top and you get a marvellous view (of the sugar mill.. Turn left into Tully just after the Visitor Information Centre at the traffic light, and drive approx 500 metres and the gumboot is on your right - you can't miss it !!

From The Atherton Tablelands The Tablelands to Licuala Lodge. (It should keep you amused or occupied, or better still if you have got kids it may even keep them amused and occupied !!) A lot depends on where you are coming from in the Tablelands. Assuming that you are coming from Yungaburra, head towards Malanda, then onto Millaa Millaa, and then to Innisfail. If you are planning to visit Paronella Park, there is a right turn (very well signposted) way before you reach Innisfail. The directions from Innisfail are at the top of the page in the 'From Cairns' section.
