Ladismith Wine Cellar.
Ladismith Winery was founded in 1939 when 73 wine grape farmers came together to establish the distillery, as it was called. In the beginning, distilling wine had been kept on the farms till the fermentation process was finished. This was done in cement tubs and then taken to the cellar where the wine was distilled and sold to the KWV in the form of spirits. Today the cellar is divided in a distillery and winery. Our wines are being market under the name of Towerkop.
Architectural Heritage
A variety of architectural styles can still be seen in the old building
of the town: from neo-Gothic to Victorian to the typical Ladismith style,
square with round vents at the front. The town has a variety of churches,
among which the exquisite Lutheran church and parsonage and the Dutch
Reformed church designed by Otto Hager are the most prominent. The Otto
Hager Church serves as the local Tourism Bureau. There are still many
attractive houses dating from the Victorian era.
Assegaay Bosch Game Drives
The farm covers some 14 000 hectares and boasts several types of vegetation,
including fynbos and succulent Karoo. All along the route, visitors can
spot game such as springbok, kudu, eland, impala, duiker, grysbok, gemsbok
and klipspringer. Giraffe are a common sight and smaller predators such
as caracal, African wild cat and mountain leopard may occasionally be
spotted.

between the Swartberg and Reserve (9 428ha) comprises virtually the entire
mountain range and is situated 33 km south-west of Oudtshoorn and 32 km
south-east of Calitzdorp. The name Gamka is derived from the Khoekhoen
("Hottentot") word gami, meaning lion.
The Reserve was established in 1974 in order to conserve a local population of endangered Cape mountain zebra and their natural habitat. The terrain is rugged, with mountainous plateaux consist of table Mountain quartzites and shales, and Bokkeveld sandstone and shales.

Travelling west of Ladismith one can visit Dwarsrivier , Voorbaat and van Zylsdamme picturesque valleys with orchards, vineyard and old farm houses. Turn left at Winkelplaas and follow the road to Vensterkraans to see the awesome damage infliction by the great Laingsburg floods in 1981 on the rail bridge of the Groot River.
Ladismith History
Ladismith is situated in the Klein Karoo at the Foot of the Klein Swartberg
mountain range. The majestic Towerkop, with it’s split peak looms
above the town. Local legend has it that an angry witch, flying overhead,
struck the peak with her wand because it obstructed her passage over the
mountain, causing it to split into two!
The Dutch Reformed congregation was founded in 1851 an the town was established in 1852 on a section of a farm Ylandsvalley donated by Balthazer Klopper, named after Lady Juana Smith, the original Ladysmith was changed in 1879 to LADISMITH to prevent confusion to its namesake in NATAL.
It serves an extensive farming area with ideal climate for the production of quality fruits - Apricot, Peaces, Plums, Nectarines and Grapes. With two cheese factories and a winery.
Ladismtih, as with the Klein Karoo benefited from the ostrich feather
boom at the turn of the previous centaury.
