Come and see them in gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway! As the days are at
their longest, come and spend a wee while exploring the sandy beaches,
bird sanctuaries and pretty villages of this little-known region.
Or if you are more drawn to buildings with a story to tell, wander round
Dumfries town itself and look for the house and garden where J.M. Barrie
was inspired to create Peter Pan and then have a drink in the pub which
was Rabbie Burns' local.
Further afield, even if you only have an hour to spare, you cannot leave
without a walk round the curiously triangular Caerlaverock Castle, just
6 miles away or perhaps you may want to go and knock on the door of the
Duke of Buccleuch up at Drumlanrig Castle.
Bird watchers are in for a treat, as the Mersehead Nature Reserve reckon
you can see up to 80 species in one day!. Golfers have been privy to the
secret of Dumfries and Galloway's treasures for a long time and return
for a golfing break year after year to enjoy a round at the great variety
of courses such as Championship Southerness and the idyllic loch-side
Lochmaben.
Mountain-bikers have more recently found paradise at the 7 Stanes courses
at Ae and Mabie. For those who prefer observing to participating, the
RSAC Rally is held here at the end of June with related events starting
on the 12th.
