The stay

Quiet camping behind a very interesting roadhouse

Out front, Canyon Roadhouse is all rusting Chevrolets, petrol pumps and sixties memorabilia. Behind it, out of sight of the road, twelve campsites sit along the edge of a dry riverbed among thorn trees and rocky hills. It is the best of both: peace and a big night sky at your own fire, and a famously quirky restaurant and bar a short walk away.

Each site has its own braai and power point, and there is shade from the trees. The ablution blocks are built from natural stone, a short stroll from the pitches, with hot showers and flushing toilets.

The Fish River Canyon is about 17 kilometres away. Campers have full use of the Roadhouse itself, so after a day at the viewpoints there is the pool, a cold drink at the bar and a slice of the Amarula cheesecake the place is known for.

Twelve shady sites on the bank of a dry riverbed, set back from the road behind the Roadhouse.
Each takes up to six people with one camper van or two SUVs, and has its own braai and power point. The stone-built shared ablutions have hot showers and flushing toilets.

Campers can use everything at the main lodge: pool, restaurant, bar, fuel station, ATM and laundry. Under 5s camp free, 6 to 13 year olds pay half the camping rate, and teenagers 13 and over pay the adult rate.

Why camp at Canyon Roadhouse?

Campsites close to the Fish River Canyon are few, and most are bare. This one comes with a lodge attached: you cook on your own fire, but there is a pool when the afternoon heat builds, a restaurant when you would rather not, and fuel, tyre repairs and an ATM before the next long gravel stretch.

Gondwana’s guided canyon drives and nature walks leave from Canyon Lodge, and you arrange your own transport there. The canyon drive includes park fees, refreshments and a snack. The self-guided hiking trail and the 4x4 //Garas self-drive start closer to home.

Inside the park, Hobas is the campsite closest to the viewpoints, and Ai-Ais camping sits by the hot springs at the southern end. For a roof, try Canyon Village or Canyon Lodge.

Morning or afternoon canyon drive — about three hours to the two main lookout points, with park fees, refreshments and a light snack included
Sunset nature drive — about three hours in the Gondwana Canyon Park. Does not go to the canyon
Sunrise hike — coffee and rusks at a viewpoint, then about an hour’s walk back
Morning walk — semi-guided, about three hours into the Canyon Park
Self-guided hiking trail — marked, two to three hours, free; tell reception before you set off
4x4 //Garas self-drive — 47 km of marked tracks through the Canyon Park. Be out before sunset
