The stay

A bush camp on the capital’s doorstep

Daan Viljoen Game Park lies in the Khomas Hochland about 20 km west of Windhoek on the C28. The camp sits beside the Augeigas River, and the lodge and campsites are run by Sun Karros in partnership with Namibia Wildlife Resorts, who have invested heavily in renovating them.

What makes the park special is that you can explore it on foot. With no large predators, game such as zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and antelope roam freely, and two well-marked hiking trails start from camp — something you can’t do in Etosha.

It is a great place for birders too, with around 200 species recorded and more than 300 plant species across the park. After a walk, cool off in the pool or eat at the Boma restaurant instead of lighting the braai.

Seven luxury campsites beside the usually dry Augeigas River, each with its own private toilet and separate shower.

Every site has a covered veranda with a built-in braai, a food preparation area with a washbasin and warm water, outdoor lighting, and 220v electricity in the kitchenette.

Campers have full use of the Boma restaurant, the swimming pool and the walking trails.

Lodge Chalets

If you would rather not camp, the lodge has nineteen chalets inspired by a traditional African kraal.

Each has its own braai facilities, or you can eat at the Boma restaurant overlooking the large swimming pool.

What to do

Why camp at Daan Viljoen?

It gives you a real bush night without the long drive. If your trip starts in Windhoek, you can collect your vehicle and be pitching camp in a game park within half an hour, then walk among the wildlife the next morning before heading on.

The luxury sites are among the most comfortable in Namibia, with your own toilet, shower and kitchenette, while the standard sites keep costs down. Everyone shares the pool, the restaurant and the trails.
