Namib Desert · 30 km from Sesriem

Little Sossus Campsite

Namib Desert, Namibia

A small campsite on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft Park, 30 km from Sesriem. Ten sites set in a semi-circle, each with its own bathroom, its own kitchen and a roof high enough to pitch a tent or park a camper underneath.

The stay

Ten sites, and a roof over every one

The shelter is the thing people remember. Each pitch has a high covered roof, tall enough to set up a tent or drive a camper underneath, which changes the whole character of a desert afternoon. Shade out here is not a luxury and there is very little of it naturally.

Each site also has its own bathroom — a hot shower, double basins and a toilet that belong to you alone rather than to the campground. The water is heated by a donkey boiler, a wood-fired drum that has warmed water on Namibian farms for a century and does it better than most electric geysers.

Ten sites arranged in a semi-circle, spaced so that nobody is looking into anybody else’s camp. Seven are sized for a couple or a small family; three are larger, for friends or family travelling together. Every one has a covered kitchen with a wash-up, its own power supply and a braai.

Private Campsite

A private site with a tall covered shelter, so your tent or camper stands in the shade all day and you have somewhere dry to sit when the weather turns.
The en-suite bathroom is yours alone: a hot shower, double basins and a toilet. Hot water comes from a traditional donkey boiler.
The kitchen and wash-up area is covered and generous enough to unpack properly, with electrical connection points at every site for charging camera batteries and running a fridge. Braai facilities are next to the kitchen.

Seven sites are small and intimate, good for a couple or a small family. Three are larger, for friends or family travelling together. Tell us your numbers and we will ask for one that suits. Bring your own tent and camping gear.

What to do

Why stay at Little Sossus Campsite?

Thirty kilometres from Sesriem puts Sossusvlei within comfortable reach as a day trip, without being in the cluster of places at the gate. As everywhere outside the park, the gate opens at sunrise, so the first light on the dunes belongs to the handful of people sleeping inside. Ask us if that shot is the reason for your trip and we will tell you straight what the in-park options cost.

What you get here instead is privacy and shade. Ten sites, not forty, set in a semi-circle so nobody is camped in your view, each with its own bathroom and a proper roof over the pitch. For anyone who has spent a week queueing for a shower block, that is the whole argument.

It suits people who want to slow down for a night rather than treat the desert as a checklist. The natural spring fountains, the photography tours and the Naukluft walking trails are all here rather than an hour down the road.
