Stampriet · a green garden on the edge of the Kalahari

Kalahari Farmhouse

Mariental Area, Kalahari, Namibia

Eleven cottages with fireplaces, patchwork quilts and verandas, set in a lush garden on the outskirts of Stampriet, 53 km northeast of Mariental. A pool, a small bar and a restaurant cooking with produce grown and cured on the farm next door.

The stay

An oasis farmhouse in the Auob valley

Stampriet lies in the Auob River valley, where artesian water rises to the surface and turns a corner of the Kalahari green. Kalahari Farmhouse makes the most of it: a quiet Gondwana lodge set in a garden of lawns, trees and flowers that feels a long way from the desert just outside.

The eleven cottages are homely rather than grand — colourful patchwork quilts on the beds, a fireplace for winter evenings, an en-suite shower, and a veranda looking onto the garden. It is the sort of place where a one-night stop easily becomes two.

Beside the lodge is Gondwana's self-sufficiency centre, whose greenhouses, butchery and smokery supply lodges right across Namibia. The restaurant cooks with the same produce, and you can pick up biltong for the road before you leave.

Twin & Triple Rooms

Most of the farmhouse is made up of nine twin rooms, with one triple for a third traveller.

Each opens onto the green garden, with a veranda for morning coffee, a fireplace and patchwork quilts for chilly nights, and an en-suite shower.

Air-conditioning cools in summer and heats in winter, when Kalahari nights get properly cold.

Family Room

One open-plan room at the far end of the garden, with four single beds and an en-suite shower.

It has the same air-conditioning, veranda and tea and coffee things as the other rooms, with space for a family to spread out.

Children up to 5 stay free, and 6 to 13-year-olds pay half the bed-and-breakfast rate.

What to do

Why stay at Kalahari Farmhouse?

It is a gentle, restful stop — somewhere to slow down for a night or two in the middle of a long self-drive, with good farm food, a pool, and a garden that is a genuine surprise this deep in the Kalahari. It sits right on the C20 and is reached on tar.

There is little to do on-site beyond the garden and the farm, and that is the point. When you want the red dunes, Kalahari Anib Lodge is 30 km away, with sunset drives and the San-guided Bushmen Wisdom walk.
