Stampriet · a palm-shaded oasis in the Kalahari

Kalahari Farmhouse Campsite

Mariental Area, Kalahari, Namibia

Eight campsites on cool green lawn under palm trees, at the edge of the Kalahari Farmhouse on the outskirts of Stampriet, 53 km northeast of Mariental. Power, lighting and a braai at every site, with the farmhouse pool, bar and restaurant a few steps away.

The stay

Camping on a Kalahari farm

Stampriet sits on one of the Kalahari's great surprises: artesian water that rises from deep underground. It turns the Kalahari Farmhouse into a green oasis of palms, gardens and greenhouses, and the campsite sits quietly on its fringes, in a grove of palm trees.

The eight sites are laid out on clean, cool lawn — a real luxury after days of dust — each with its own power point, electric lighting and a braai. The ablution block is shared and close by.

Next door is the Kalahari Farmhouse itself, with a swimming pool, a bar and a restaurant, and the Gondwana self-sufficiency centre that supplies produce to lodges across Namibia. A wander past the greenhouses and the butchery is part of the charm of staying here.

Every site has a power point and electric lighting, so charging batteries and cooking after dark are easy.

The braai is ready for the evening fire — firewood, ice and braai packs can be bought at reception (order braai packs before 10:00).

Ablutions & Farmhouse Facilities

The campsite shares a central ablution block with showers and toilets.

Campers are welcome at the Kalahari Farmhouse next door: cool off in the swimming pool, have a drink at the bar, or book supper at the restaurant, which makes good use of the farm's own produce.

Wi-Fi, laundry and secure parking are all available at the main lodge.

What to do

Why stay at Kalahari Farmhouse Campsite?

Most Kalahari camping is on sand; this is on grass, under palms, with a pool and a bar a short walk away. It is reached on tar, so it is an easy stop for any vehicle, and the green, sheltered setting is a welcome change of scene in the middle of a desert trip.

It is a quiet, unhurried place rather than an activity hub — but the red dunes are close. Kalahari Anib Lodge, 30 km away, runs sunset drives and the San-guided Bushmen Wisdom walk, which campers here can book and drive across to.
