Canyon Nature Park · the western rim of the Fish River Canyon

Fish River Lodge

Fish River Canyon, southern Namibia

The only lodge set directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon. Nineteen glass-fronted chalets stand a few metres from the edge, in a private nature park where the silence, the stars and the guided descents into the canyon are reserved for the few who make the journey.

The stay

Nothing between you and the canyon

Most visitors see the Fish River Canyon from a viewing platform, for an hour, at midday. At Fish River Lodge you live on its edge. The lodge and its chalets stand between five and eight metres from the rim, so the first light of morning, the long shadows of afternoon and the colour that drains from the rock at dusk all happen just beyond your window.

It sits in the Canyon Nature Park, a vast private reserve on the western rim with some 75 kilometres of river frontage. Few people reach this side of the canyon, and that is the luxury here: space, silence and a sky so dark the stars seem close enough to touch. Hartmann’s mountain zebra, klipspringer and kudu move through the park, and black eagles ride the thermals rising from the gorge.

Unlike the public viewpoints, the canyon floor is open to you. Guides take small groups down by open vehicle or on foot to the river and its permanent rock pools, a world almost no visitor to the canyon ever sees. This is a place for two or three nights, not one: the canyon reveals itself slowly.

Where you will sleep

Nineteen chalets on the rim

Seven double, ten twin and two family chalets, all of the same generous design and all facing the canyon. Each has panoramic and rooftop windows, so you can watch the stars from bed.

Double Chalet

A double bed faces a wall of glass, with rooftop windows above, so the canyon fills the room by day and the stars do by night.

A private indoor bathroom is joined by an outdoor shower for warm evenings, and a private terrace looks straight across the gorge.

Seven of the chalets are doubles — the natural choice for couples and honeymooners.

Twin Chalet

The same chalet with two single beds, and the same panoramic and rooftop windows looking out over the canyon.

An indoor bathroom, an outdoor shower and a private terrace on the rim complete it.

There are ten twins, and a few in the best positions carry a slightly higher rate — ask us which.

Family Chalet

Two chalets are set aside for families, with the same canyon-facing design, outdoor shower and terrace.

Children up to 5 stay free when sharing with adults, and 6 to 12 year olds pay a reduced rate.

Because the chalets stand only a few metres from the edge, children need close supervision at all times. Tell us your children’s ages and we will confirm the best set-up.

What to do

Why stay at Fish River Lodge?

Because it is the only way to sleep on the rim itself, and the only way to go deep into the canyon without committing to the multi-day hiking trail. Days here are unhurried: a full-day drive down to the river, a guided hike from rim to floor in season, an e-bike ride along the edge, then a sundowner on a promontory as the gorge turns red and gold.

Please plan the route carefully. The lodge is on the western rim, reached on the D463 gravel road from the B4. The public viewpoints at Hobas and the Gondwana lodges — Canyon Village, Canyon Lodge and Canyon Roadhouse — are on the eastern side, several hours away by road, and so are the hot springs at Ai-Ais. Combine them only with a night in between.

Before you book

  • Check-in is from 14:00, check-out by 10:00
  • Allow two or three nights — the drive is long and the canyon rewards time
  • The lodge is on the western rim: do not follow the C12 to the eastern side
  • Chalets are 5–8 metres from the edge — children need close supervision
  • Children up to 5 stay free; ages 6–12 pay a reduced rate; 13 and over pay adult rates
  • Expect strong winds year round; summer days reach 30–40°C and winter nights near 0°C
  • Supplies come from Keetmanshoop, so give dietary requirements in advance
  • Wi-Fi in common areas only; free parking; no pets; Visa and Mastercard accepted

Activities

  • Full-day canyon drive: a descent to the canyon floor in an open vehicle with a guide
  • Guided day hike from the rim into the canyon — seasonal, and it needs a good level of fitness
  • Rim to River trails: multi-day guided hikes and fat-bike trails, staying at Camps Eternity and Edge — must be booked ahead
  • Sundowner drive to one of the most scenic spots on the rim
  • Canyon rim walks on marked trails, suitable for all fitness levels
  • Guided e-bike rides along trails on the canyon edge
  • Birding and stargazing — more than 240 bird species, and some of the darkest skies in Namibia

Getting there

  • From Keetmanshoop take the B4 west for 72 km, then the D463 gravel road south for 85 km (allow up to 2 hours), then 19 km on the signposted lodge road
  • About 7 hours by road from Windhoek and 2½ hours from Keetmanshoop
  • A high-clearance vehicle is best, especially from November to April after rain — check road conditions before you set off
  • Refuel at every chance: the nearest fuel is 150–180 km away in Keetmanshoop, Bethanie or Rosh Pinah
  • Fly-in from Windhoek to the lodge’s own airstrip — ask us to arrange it
  • GPS: 27°31′38.4″S, 17°32′12.8″E (−27.527333, 17.536883) — open in Google Maps
