The stay

Carved out of the mountain, not dropped on it

Namib Outpost was built from natural materials into the base of a mountain, and the effect is that it disappears into the landscape rather than standing out against it. Stone walls, thatch and floor-to-ceiling glass, with an uninterrupted view across the plain to the Naukluft mountains and the dunes on the horizon.

Only twelve units in total, and each one has its outdoor area screened by natural stone privacy walls, so you get the whole panorama without seeing anybody else’s deck. The best detail is the sleeper deck: every suite has one, and a bed can be made up out there for a night in the open with your own bathroom a few steps away.

The lodge sits on a large private reserve and runs entirely on solar. There are two swimming pools, an observation deck up on the mountain above the lodge for sundowners, a massage lounge, and a desert lounge at the pool deck with a serious whisky and cigar selection.

Suite

Ten suites of 50 to 60 square metres, partly built on stilts, with stone walls, a thatched roof and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Twin singles or a queen bed, air-conditioning, a lounge area, a desk, a safe, a mini bar and fridge, and tea and coffee making facilities.
The en-suite bathroom has a double-volume shower and double vanities, with solar-heated water throughout.
Outside there is a private sundeck with loungers, screened by natural stone privacy walls, and a separate outdoor sleeper deck where a bed can be set up for the night.

Mosquito nets, a hairdryer and Wi-Fi are provided.

Superior Suite

One superior suite, at around 100 square metres roughly double the size of the standard ones.
It has an additional living room, an extra-large bed, and a large private deck with loungers — and, the reason most people book it, its own plunge pool looking straight down the view axis to the dunes on the horizon.
Everything the other suites have is here too: en-suite with double-volume shower and double vanities, solar-heated water, air-conditioning, safe, desk, mini bar, fridge, tea and coffee facilities and Wi-Fi.

There is only one, and honeymooners tend to find it first. Ask early.

Family Suite

One family suite of about 75 square metres, with the same comfort as the standard suites plus a second bedroom holding two single beds.
Sleeps four in two separate bedrooms rather than four beds in one room, which makes a real difference on a long trip.
En-suite bathroom with a shower and double vanities, toiletries and a hairdryer supplied, air-conditioning throughout, and shaded decks looking out over the plains.

There is only one family suite at the lodge, so if you need it, say so as early as you can.

What to do

Why stay at Namib Outpost?

Twelve units on a large private reserve means you will not be queueing for anything, and the stone privacy walls around each deck mean you can use your outdoor space without an audience. For a lodge at this price that is not always a given.

The sleeper deck is the thing people come back talking about. Every suite has one, so sleeping out under the sky is not an expensive add-on here but simply something you can decide to do at dinner.

Horseback safaris are the other unusual thing. Very few places in this area offer riding, and on open plains with game around it is a good deal more interesting than a vehicle.

The honest part is the drive. At 34 km, Sesriem is about half an hour away, and as everywhere outside the park the gate opens at sunrise. If the first light on the dunes is the whole reason for your trip, tell us and we will be straight about what the in-park options cost.
