Ten canvas tents on raised wooden decks, tucked in among boulders at the foot of the Tsaris Mountains. Solar heats the water, the bed rolls out onto your own deck, and there is nothing else in sight.

The stay

Ten tents, a rock pool and a very dark sky

The camp is built into a boulder field rather than on top of it. Each tent sits on its own raised wooden deck, lifted clear of the desert floor so air moves underneath and the canvas stays bearable through a summer afternoon. The boulders do the rest of the work, breaking up the sightlines so that from your deck you cannot see your neighbours at all.

It runs entirely off its own power and heats its water with solar, which in practice means an outdoor shower in the middle of the Namib that actually runs hot. Ten tents is the whole camp — there is no third wing, no conference room and no crowd at breakfast.

The best thing here costs nothing extra. The two single beds convert to a king and the whole bed is on wheels, so you can roll it out onto the deck and sleep under a sky with no town within a hundred kilometres to spoil it.

Canvas Tent (Double or Twin)

A custom-built canvas room on a raised wooden deck, with uninterrupted desert views and a good deal of privacy for the money.
Two extra-length single beds convert into a king, and the bed is mounted on wheels so it can be pushed out onto the deck to sleep under the stars.
The en-suite bathroom is large and has both an indoor and an outdoor shower, with the water heated by solar.
A sitting area, portable mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, wardrobe, electrical outlets and daily housekeeping are all provided.

There are only ten tents, and all of them are this one type — so the only thing to decide is twin or king.

What to do

Why stay at Elegant Desert Eco Camp?

Forty-five kilometres of gravel separates the camp from the Sesriem gate, so a Sossusvlei day trip is a real outing rather than a stroll — leave early, take water, expect to be out most of the day.

What this place offers you is silence and a sky. There is no settlement near enough to put a glow on the horizon, so the stargazing is exceptional, and with only ten tents the camp never feels busy.

Guests here can also use the facilities at Elegant Desert Lodge, seven kilometres up the road, which is worth knowing if you want a bigger pool or a longer lunch.
