Built on the rivers edge in a spectacular secluded Gorge, Sewula Gorge Lodge is in a location where one is surrounded by nature. Walk in the pristine bushveld, or just sit on the deck and immerse yourself in the birdsong, or listen to the bark of the Bushbuck or cry of the Jackal, and go to sleep to the sound of rushing water as the river flows timelessly by.

Our exclusivity policy guarantees that during your stay, you will be surrounded only by those you have chosen to share the beauty of nature and the solitude of the lodge environment with.

Sewula Gorge Lodge

Sewula Gorge Lodge Accommodation

Sewula is particularly suited to small groups of family or friends, or business colleagues who enjoy the informality of self catering with the benefit of helpful staff to wash up and generally assist.

To further assist you we provide a “Provisioning Service”, whereby we send a draft shopping list, which you return, and we do the rest.

Four en-suite cottages with sleeping lofts for children and young people, provide beds for 8 adults and 10 children. Three of the cottages are twin-bedded with showers and one is a double with a bath and shower.

The rooms are serviced daily. There is a strikingly designed and comfortable Main Building consisting of a fully equipped modern kitchen, lounge with an open fireplace and dining room with a generous outside deck.

Sewula is a self catering establishment, but the sleeping units/cottages do not have kitchens attached. The main kitchen is situated in the main communal building.

Activities

Not that you need do anything, SEWULA is perfect for spending your days and nights comfortably lazing, reading and socialising, surrounded by the unique, natural drama of the Sewula Gorge, the waterfall and the river.

Walking Trails
If you want to walk, SEWULA offers much. There are clearly marked paths and guides. These include:

The Shaded River Walk, which takes you to the Bald Ibis Nesting Colony.
The Uphill Amble – Which takes you to the top of the Gorge where trenches are found from the Anglo-Boer War
The Historical Meander – Up the old wagon route (N3) road and past the fortified Iron Age Man Site, to the Rensburg Koppie National Monument Site from the Zulu-Boer Wars.

Swimming
Swim in the cool rock pools and sunbathe on the sandstone slabs.

Historic Sites
A fine example of an iron-age (14th Century) ‘fortified hill site’ situated immediately behind SEWULA is easily accessed by use of the “Historical Meander”

Of great interest is the Rensburg Koppie National Monument where in 1838 a small group of Voortrekkers escaped being killed by Zulu soldiers by fleeing to the stony hillock alongside of the iron-age hill.

The Uphill Amble is a steep but gentle walk to an Anglo-Boer War 1899 defensive position with its dry-packed stone ‘sangas’ clearly visible.

Mountain Bike Trails
With the dirt roads, and worn cattle paths on this working farm, there is great mountain biking to be done. Bring your own Mountain Bikes. Bikes are not provided. Note that all activities are done at your own risk.

Botanist Haven – for tree and flower enthusiasts
There are numerous, tree, flower, aloe and grass species to be found in this area. Described by botanists as being a botanist’s haven.

Bird watching, Fishing and Wildlife
The Bird Life is amazing with Savannah, and thornveld birds in abundance. We have Gymnogenes (African Harrier Hawk), various eagle species including the Fish Eagle and a Bald Ibis Nesting Colony at the end of the Shaded River Walk. Be sure to bring your binoculars, and prepare to sit on the deck, under your umbrella and settle down to an day of birdsong.

The surrounding cattle ranch offers dam fishing in a 27ha dam for Florida Bass. Please bring your own fishing equipment. Braai site available at the dam – for guests only.

A variety of Antelope can be seen on your visit. The farm has: Kudu, Blesbuck, Impala, Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Oribi, Bushbuck and Warthog. Smaller wildlife is also abundant such as Porcupines, Aardvark, Antbears, Bushpigs, the Cape Clawless Otter and many others.

Activities Outside of Camp
If one wants to get into a motorcar then there is a treasure trove of activities. Estcourt town has all sporting facilities, good supermarkets and other services. The Drakensberg is an hour away, as are the Battlefield sites on the Tugela line and the Midlands Meander is reached within half an hour. The delightful Weenen Nature Reserve is a great picnic venue – 45 minutes drive from Sewula – and boasts the highest density per hectare2 of Black and White Rhino in South Africa.
