The Antbear Guesthouse is a thatched, whitewashed cottage built high on a natural platform overlooking the Bushmans River and Giants Castle. This cottage is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast.

We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 10 guests at a time. It’s a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste.

Antbear Guesthouse

The Antbear Guest House offers affordable accommodation in the foothills of the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg near Giants Castle in South Africa. This guesthouse is an ideal place to base yourself while you discover the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal South Africa. We invite you to spend time here and share some of our dream. We like to think that the Antbear is a place for feeding your soul and rekindling your spirit. Built in the 1940’s the quaint and charming cottage puts its arms around you and reminds you that there are things more important than everyday life.

The name “Antbear” comes from its previous resident who lived under the floorboards before its restoration just a few years ago. It’s filled with gorgeous hand crafted furniture, wonderful wooden sculptures and a seemingly never ending collection of artistic aspects to discover.

Plan for slow and decadent dinners by candlelight prepared by your hosts Andrew and Conny. Sometimes it’s a Moroccan spread including a genuine Moroccan tagine prepared on wood coals or maybe it’s a surprise of just how delightful Chinese food can be. Breakfast is served with freshly baked bread and scones and often it becomes a 2 hour affair.

There is plenty to do in the area too. Walks in the Drakensberg mountains, visits to bushman paintings, horse trails though a private game reserve, canoe trips, canopy tours and the Midlands Meander to mention but a few. Explore the activities of the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands.

Antbear Guesthouse Accommodation

The Antbear Guest House has seven double bedrooms. Each room is differently decorated with uniquely eccentric and artistic wooden furniture. The choice between an ensuite double, luxury suite or a luxury cave is yours. All our rooms are comfortable and have the standard features you expect like hair dryers, tea and coffee trays, a complimentary caraf of cherry and a mini fridge.

Room 1 - Luxury Suite
All our luxury suites have king size double beds and en-suite bath rooms. There is a spacious private lounge with a wood burning fireplace as well as panel heaters. The bathroom has a jacuzzi spa bath and seperate shower. There is also an upstairs loft which is great for an extra person or children.

Room 2 - Luxury Suite
What makes the luxury rooms special is that they are very generous. This one has its own private lounge and of course has a king size double bed. The bathroom is ensuite and has a jacuzzi spa bath too. There is also an upstairs loft with 2 single beds which is ideal if you have 2 children. A veranda covered by grapes and granadills makes for a lovely shady spot to just sit and enjoy the view.

Room 3 - Ensuite double
This ensuite double even has a jacuzzi bath. The lounge is part of the bedroom and contains an open wood burning fireplace. With a small loft above the bedroom with a dressing table and lovely view of the weaver bird nests in the Jacaranda tree.

Room 4 - Luxury Suite
This luxury suite is a real sun trap with a lovely little veranda to sit and watch the sun set . There is a fire place in the lounge and jacuzzi spa bath in the bathroom.

Room 5 - Ensuite Double
This room has an ensuite bathroom with a jacuzzi spa bath and fire and a fire place in the bedroom. Of course every detail has been attended to with a slant towards arty and unique. Just lay in the queen size bed and look out as the sun rises onto the whole high Drakensberg. A spectical of colour unsurpassed.

Room 6 - Ensuite Double
The smallest of our rooms which looks out onto the garden.

Room 7 - Luxury Cave
This unique cave is an accommodation unit that consists of a tastefully decorated en-suite bedroom with a Jacuzzi spa bath adjoining a lounge with open fireplace. Glass doors open on to a deck with an uninterrupted panoramic view of more than 180 degrees from Giants Castle right through to the Amphitheatre and including the rolling foothills of the Bushman’s River Valley.

Activities

There is a lot to do in the Drakensberg region and the Antbear is well positioned to take advantage of the best of whats on offer. Our advice is to spend time at Giants Castle for some dramatic hiking oppertunities, Kamberg for a Southern Drakensberg aspect of the mountains and someof the best rock art available in South Africa. Of course the Drakensberg region offers all sorts of adventure activities which include horse trails, game viewing and game reserves, microlight flights, helicopter flips, white water rafting, quad bikes and hot air ballooning. Then there are battlefields tours, arts and crafts, resturants, cheese tasting and lots more.
