The Soutpansberg
The Soutpansberg stretches 130 kilometres from west to east through the Limpopo region. The salt pans situated at the foot of its north western slopes are still mined. The area incorporates natural forests, indigenous bush characterised by the remarkable form of the baobab, wonderful wildlife, a profusion of birds and exiting adventure opportunities.

The region boasts one of the most varied natural, geological, archaeological and cultural systems in the world and has a fascinating history, offering visitors the 'Salt of the Earth", the best of culture, history and nature.

The Soutpansberg is the gateway to Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique and attractions such as Mapungubwe National Park, the Kruger National park, Victoria Falls and the game reserves in the Tuli Block area.

Craft and Art
Besides running the lodge, the owners of Madi a Thavha are very much involved with art and crafts. This has resulted in the brand Madi a Thavha design, a small business that produces home decoration products and gifts, mainly made from Venda fabrics and decorated with traditional Tsonga beading and embroidery techniques.

Madi a Thavha has built a strong relationship with several Venda and Tsonga artists and crafters in the area. This relationship has resulted in mutual benefits for Madi a Thavha, guests and the artists.

Madi a Thavha also accommodates a permanent exhibition about Venda and Tsonga art and crafts in and around the lodge. Products from about 15 artists and crafters in the north of Limpopo are displayed and can be bought. On request tailor made products can be made. The exhibition is the outcome of an intensive artist mentoring programme.

The production and marketing of all products are in line with Fair Trade principles.

Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism can be defined as tourism ‘that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit’ and where ‘tourism destinations are run by passionate people who care about the environment and local people’ (The Responsible Tourism Partnership).

Madi a Thavha works on building sustainable relationships with our employees, their families and the local communities around us. This integrated approach is strengthening our tourism concept and benefits the surrounding communities.

Our approach is in line with the principles of responsible tourism. We feel that such an approach is extremely important when you run a tourism business in an area that is stricken by poverty, unemployment and HIV/Aids. Thanks to our approach we have been awarded with the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa accreditation.
