Golf Course & other Sporting Facilities

The golf course at Eshowe Hills Country Club was opened in 1907, it is now one of the oldest clubs in South Africa still playing on the original site.

The “new” course was designed by the legendary Bob Grimsdell in the 1950’s and has recently been upgraded by European Masters Champion and multiple tournament winner, Jeff Hawkes. Great care has been taken to keep the “Grimsdell character” of the course.

The course now has 5 water features and a boardwalk which takes golfers and golf carts from tee to green on the 8th to a height of 5 meters through the forest canopy. This spectacular feature is unique in Southern Africa.

Eshowe Hills has 6 all weather tennis courts 2 of which are floodlit.

Two squash courts are a popular amenity on the estate.

The town has a well used bowling green just 2 minutes from the north gate.

Lake Phobane/Goedetrouw is famous for its bass fishing ( ranked among the top three dams in S.Africa) and fishing tournaments are a regular event. The lake is 10 kms from Eshowe.

Birding

The Zululand Birding Route is known worldwide. It is a project of Birdlife South Africa and focuses on the conservation of birds and their habitat.

Eshowe is surrounded by the Dlinza Forest which is an important region of the Zululand Birding Route. The forests of Eshowe Hills are part of the Dlinza Forest and are, therefore, home to the species found there including the Spotted Ground Thrush, the Green Malkoha, Narina Trogon and White-Eared Barbet.

All areas surrounding the golf course, where feasible, have been allowed to revert to natural grasslands and this has attracted many new bird species to the area, as have the new water features and constructed wetlands.

Four dams have been built, which in addition to adding interest to the golf course, are a major attraction to new bird species. The list of water birds seen include, Yellowbilled ducks, Whitefaced ducks, Redbilled teal, Egyptian geese, Moorhens, Black crake, Little bittern, Grey & Blackheaded herons, Greenbacked heron, Hamerkop, Malachite, Pied, Pygmy and Brownhooded kingfishers. None of these were regular visitors previously, now several of them are breeding here.
