Tourist Attractions
Ncandu State Forest Nature Reserve

Situated on the Northern Drakensberg escarpment it is relatively unknown, however, it is the second largest indigenous forest in KwaZulu Natal. Located approximately 32 kilometres from Newcastle, the reserve is a typical high-altitude forest and is comprised mainly of steep yellowood gorges and grassland plateau habitats.

A number of streams meet in the area to form the Ncandu River which is an ideal habitat for trout. There are a quite a few scenic walking and horse trails which lead from the grassy plateaus past majestic stone cliffs, to a number of waterfalls. A large number of birdlife has been spotted in the area although no formal study has been conducted.

Chelmsford Nature Reserve
The Ntshingwayo Dam on the Ngagane River has created a beautiful sanctuary for a large number of waterfowl, including Egyptian Geese, Flamingos and assorted ducks. It has also become a wonderful playground for power boating, anglers and other watersport enthusiasts and provides the ideal spot for picnics.

The surrounding grasslands and acacia veld is the playground of several large game, including rhino, wildebeest, hartebeest, springbok and blesbok. The dam has a prolific birdlife with over 200 species being recorded in the area.

Fort Amiel
Situated in Newcastle, it was built in 1876 by Major Charles Frederick Amiel and a force of two hundred men from the 80th Staffordshire Volunteers.

Today the fort houses the Newcastle Cultural Museum which has a variety of military displays with the focus being on the two Anglo-Boer Wars. It also features a period room, which illustrates the career of old time Newcastle resident Sir Rider Haggard, author of King Solomon's Mines.
