Provincial Capital
Mbombela (Nelspruit) is the capital of the Mpumalanga province and the main centre for tourism, commerce and government in the province. It is the ideal place from which to plan your visit to the lowveld parks or the Kruger National Park, or to begin a drive along one of the many historic and scenic routes of the escarpment.

Mbombela (Nelspruit) offers a wide range of interesting sightseeing tours within a short distance of the city, as well as a number of enjoyable outings within the city limits. The city of Nelspruit is situated 716 meters above sea level, at the edge of the lowveld on the Crocodile River. The climate is subtropical, with mean temperatures in summer of 30°C and in winter of 24°C. An average annual rainfall of 620mm occurs mainly in the summer months, between September and March.

Lowveld National Botanic Gardens
One of the finest and most interesting botanic gardens in South Africa , set in beautiful surroundings on the Crocodile River near Mbombela (Nelspruit). The gardens feature a large waterfall, 180m steel hanging bridge and a number of unique botanical collections from a Cycad garden to a tropical forest containing a comprehensive variety of fig trees.

Kruger National Park
Nelspruit is the ideal base from shich to visit this 20 000 000 hectare nature reserve. It offers more than 500 bird species, 300 different trees and more than 200 of the larger mammals.

The Park, a world famous conservation area, can be visited daily from a base at Mbombela (Nelspruit), via the Malelane Gate or Numbi Gate.

This is an excellent option for visitors who are unable to secure bookings in advance for accommodation inside the Park.

Panorama Route
The Panorama Route is one of the most beautiful and popular travel destinations in South Africa. Leading rugged mountain range of the northern Drakensberg in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.

Bourkes Luck Potholes
At the meeting place of the Blyde and Treur Rivers in Mpumalanga is a geological formation known as the Bourkes Luck Potholes. The rubbing of water-borne pebbles over many centuries has scoured out a collection of rock shapes which are now protected. They are named after a miner, Tom Bourke, who struck it lucky at a mine he opened nearby.

Sudwala Caves
Situated in the Mankelekele Mountains, these caves offer a unique experience to the visitor. The sheer size and extent of this natural network of caves allows for tours of up to six hours in duration. The dinosaur park adjacent to the caves features life-size replicas of prehistoric animals.

These caves offer a fascinating network of cave chambers with amazing limestone formations and interesting collenia fossils: Guided tours available 08h30 to 16h30. The 6 hour long Crystal Cave Tour every first Saturday of the month offers a challenge to the less fainthearted.

Blyde Gorge
Blyde Gorge is one of the most spectacular green canyons in the whole of Africa . View points at the top of the 800 metre high gorge offer spectacular views which go on for miles.

God´s Window
God´s Window Escarpment is a popular vantage point along the Blyde River Canyon , in South Africa . At God´s Window on the Escarpment, majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the game reserves which have made the area one of Africa´s prime wildlife destinations.

Mac Mac Falls
When gold was discovered along the Mac-Mac River in 1874, a gold rush followed. Many of the gold miners were Scottish, hence why the camp was named Mac-Mac. In an attempt to divert the river, the miners placed dynamite on the crest of the Mac-Mac Falls. The explosion split the 64-metre-high waterfall into two streams which plunge into the forested gorge below.

Pilgrims Rest
The historical town of Pilgrim´s Rest was declared a living museum in the 1970´s to preserve the history of gold mining in the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The gold fields date back to ancient times when unknown miners worked the quartz reefs for gold.

A number of insignificant gold deposits were discovered in the northern parts of South Africa between 1840 and 1870. The first, small gold rush in South Africa took place in 1874 when payable gold was discovered on the farm Geelhoutboom near the town of Sabie on the Mpumalanga escarpment.
