Activities And Attractions In The Area

Nelspruit
Nelspruit / Mbombela is itself is a hub of activities. For those who want a good night out there is fantastic food (let’s not forget Mozambican prawns) and good live music provided by local bands and performers as well as the many national and international artists who are constantly visiting our city.

So no matter what your preference or hobby, you are bound to find something that makes your visit to Nelspruit/Mbombela and its immediate surrounds memorable.

Lowveld Botanical Garden: this comprises of over 600 indigenous plant species, 650 indigenous tree species and over 2000 additional plants. The Crocodile River winds its way through the Gardens forming cascades and waterfalls along the way.

This is a must for garden enthusiasts, birders, photographers, hikers (there are lots of trails and walks throughout the garden and along the river’s edge).

A therapeutic experience for stressed souls! From May to September midday concerts are held in the garden. Night walks and talks also take place.

The Kruger National Park: the cherry on the top as far as African experiences go. The Malelane Gate is a mere 60km from Chilli High. No matter how many times you visit the park, every experience will be unique. It is a paradise for wild life enthusiasts, birders and photographers.

There are 150 mammals to be on the look out for, 300 species of trees and 500 species of birds to identify.

Pilgrims’ Rest: another reminder of this area’s mining past. This small town was declared a living museum in 1973. An annual international Gold Panning weekend competition is held during September.

The Blyde River Canyon: one of the natural wonders of Africa and the third largest and only green canyon in the world is a 26km long gorge carved out of the face of the escarpment.

God’s Window: so called because of the panoramic view of the Lowveld and on a clear day the view extends across the Lowveld, past the Kruger National Park to Mozambique.

Mac Mac Falls and Pools: One of the escarpment regions with many waterfalls and majestic view points. These falls are the second highest in the region. The pools are a popular picnic spot and the secretary bird hiking trail starts at this point. A wonderful cultural outdoor market is guaranteed to entice you to make a purchase you won’t regret.

Shangana Cultural Village: this is just 5 km west of Hazyview and here one gets a sense of the local Shangaan community. Tours to the village can also be arranged.

The Sudwala Caves: these are the oldest caves known to mankind, formed over 300 million years ago. The Swazi people used them to hide/retreat from the Zulus. The ceiling of the caves contains fossilized colonies of blue-green algae known as “stromatolites”, one of the earliest identifiable forms of life in Southern Africa and which flourished about 2 000 million years ago.

Barberton: this neighbouring town which features many reminders of the early gold-rush era, is now easily accessible via a fully upgraded road which is much enjoyed by motorists, bikers and cyclists who love the thrill of the corners. An annual Diggers’ Festival is held in September.

Barberton is also famous for its world heritage site, the Makhonjwa Mountains. A small beautiful range of mountains also referred to as “The Genesis of Life” as despite being 3, 5 million years old, it faithfully records the earliest life forms on earth as well as provides evidence of the first recorded massive meteorite impact.

Crocodile and Reptile Park: this is the largest in Africa and close to the Botanical Gardens. There is also an Animal Touch Farm.

For those who wish to linger longer, there are riverside trails and braai areas as well as a tea garden where light refreshments can be enjoyed.
