About Barberton
Embark on a journey back in time to a quaint little town called BARBERTON, Mpumalanga, South Africa. . .

Nestled between the mystical mountain rocks, you travel back in time, 3 500 000 000 years ago, when the first rocks and consequently the first life forms occurred on planet earth. The Barberton Mountainlands form the core of a proposed World Heritage Site, as it is central to the Achaean Greenstone Belt, in which some of the oldest and best preserved rocks and first life forms on earth are found.

This makes the Barberton Mountainlands one of the oldest regions on our planet, it’s as if you enter a vast open air museum that displays more than 3,5 billion years of earth history, also with archeological sites dating back from the stone- and iron ages.

The Barberton Mountainlands is one of the most beautiful wilderness areas with ever-changing mountains, pristine savannah, bushveld, indigenous riverine and mountain forest, all intersected by gin clear perennial streams. The plant species diversity is second only to the Cape Fynbos with 2 100 different species and still counting. The Barberton Mountainlands is a bird watcher’s haven with more than 400 species being recorded here, along with 24 different amphibians and reptiles.

Augusta Roberto first discovered gold in Barberton on 20 June 1883. During 1886 Barberton was at the height of its boom. Flashy beauties such as Cockney Liz reigned over a frenetic nightlife. The well-known Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and his dog immortalized in print as “Jock of the Bushveld” whom had many great adventures in this region and a statue of Jock still graces the town.

Barberton is seen as the Mecca of adventure sport. Conditions are perfect for paragliding and micro light flying. Endless mountain trails exist for 4x4 vehicles, horse riding, mountain bikes, quad bikes and hiking. Other popular activities include golf, gold panning, jogging, bird watching, scenic drives, hunting, underground mining tours, etc.

Today Barberton is a charming, atmospheric little town, with many old buildings still standing and interesting museums displaying the uniqueness of the local Geology and the history during the gold rush days. Gold is still mined here and the town also boasts with the oldest and richest gold and silver deposits in the world.
