Ullapool, an appealing port and resort in Wester Ross, the fishing port of Ullapool in Wester Ross comes alive in summer when it receives a large influx of holidaymakers. Many move on by ferry to Stornoway on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, but it is a good base for exploring the area, and has a marvellous setting jutting out into Loch Broom. Ullapool Accommodation Runie Lodge was built in 1851 as the local school and schoolhouse, it ceased being a school in 1941 and has since become a family home.

The old schoolteachers house is let as luxury holiday accommodation, it has its own driveway and private entrance. It is fully equipped to a high standard and can comfortably accommodate 5 persons.


The house is set in a beautiful location among pine and larch trees and the River Kanaird winds its way around the bottom of the safe enclosed garden.

Runie Lodge is situated beneath the dramatic Ben Mhor Coigach mountain ridge in the crofting community of Blughasary. Close by the lodge is the River Runie with many waterfalls and pools.

Runie Lodge Accommodation

We have refurbished Runie Lodge in keeping providing a luxury self-catering accommodation with spacious rooms. There are original stone features, oak beams and woodburning stoves. Recent Italian guests were very impressed with the location and lodge and said 'the lodge is beautiful and the photographs do not due it justice'.

The Accommodation comprises a sitting room, cosy with sofa and armchairs, original stonewall, oak beam, an open fire to sit by to read all the books that are on the shelves and for musical guests there is also a piano. It's a homely place to reflect over the day and relax.

The kitchen is a large light room equipped to a very high standard. Sitting on the window seat by the table and woodburning stove watching the birds feed is a great way to start the day.

A large comfortable kingsize bedroom with a stone wall and feature stove has windows looking to Ben Mhor Coigach and River Runie. The twin bedroom is a light airy room which has a chandelier and convenient hand wash basin and overlooks the river. The single room is cosy with a pretty chandelier and looks towards the mountains.

The bathroom has oak flooring and chandelier, and a wonderful deep roll top bath to relax in while looking out to the hills you may have just climbed!

Smoking Policy
We kindly request that guests do not smoke in the house but you may smoke in the grounds.

Walking and cycling can be undertaken directly from the house (safe for children as on a small track). Bar-b-que available.

Runie Lodge is situated just 7 miles north of Ullapool and is ideally situated for exploring the north west coast of the Highlands and is the perfect place to return to after a day on the hills or beaches. The lodge has a tranquil, peaceful feel and is the ideal location to relax and unwind.

With an area rich in spectacular scenery these peaceful holiday homes make an ideal location for those interested in climbing, walking, cycling, fishing, boating or diving.

Ullapool
Ullapool has first rate facilities including a medical centre, chemist, tourist information, supermarket, craft shops and leisure centre.

Fishing boating and diving
Wildlife lovers could watch birds including the sea eagle, seals, otters, porpoise or dolphins and the occasional whale, there are often spectacular sunsets over the summer isles. The harbour is an ideal place to sit and watch the local fishing boats.

The ferry to Stornoway offers the chance of a unique day trip over the Minch to the Isle of Lewis and there are various other boat trips to Isle Martin and the Summer Isles. For the thrill seeker there is a 2 hour powerboat trip on a 12 seater RIB with Seascape or for those looking for a comfortable lounge with refreshment area then the Summer Queen would be the boat for you.

Or bring your own boat, launch at Ullapool or Ardmair and cruise around the various isles. In a canoe you can cross the short stretch of water from Ardmair to Isle Martin. This is an ideal area for fishing, diving or for gathering mussels or winkles.

Lochbroom Leisure Centre has a swimming pool, sauna, gym and sports hall where you can also enjoy a game of tennis or badminton. For those wishing to practice indoors there is also a climbing wall.

You may be lucky to see a film in 'The Screen Machine' which comes at regular intervals to the Leisure Centre. The screen machine is Britain's only eighty-seat, fully air-conditioned mobile cinema. Visitors are made very welcome at the lovely 9-hole golf course overlooking Lochbroom. What better location for the keen golfer?

There is a thriving music and arts scene in the village - held in the pubs, village hall or McPhail Centre. Weekly during the summer the local pipe band and dancers play and perform on the calmac car park. Ullapool also has the Feis Roy in May, the Loopallu Music Festival in September, and a Guitar Festival in October. Don't miss the Rotary summer fete 'Round the Pier Day' in July or 'Odd Balls Day' in August.

Eating Out
There are many different tastes to savour in the cafes, restaurants and pubs in Ullapool and surrounding area. They range from a michelin star hotel at Achiltibuie, traditional Scottish fare, local fish, tapas or top class fish and chips as well as Indian and Chinese carry outs.

Beaches
The West Coast has many stunning beaches, from the large flat unique stones of Ardmair beach 3 miles north of Ullapool and further a field the sandy expanse and dunes of Achnahaird. Also beautiful sandy beaches at Clactol, Achmelvich, Oldshoremore, Mellon Udrigle, Balnakeil and Sango Bay. Pack a picnic and take pleasure in a day at the beach.

Waterfalls
Close to Runie Lodge within walking distance there are many small waterfalls along the River Runie. 12 miles south of Ullapool is the breathtaking 1 mile long Corrieshalloch Gorge where the river plunges 150 feet over the Falls of Meashach, walk across the suspension bridge for superb photo opportunities.

There are walks close to Ardessie Falls with beautiful views across Lochbroom and also outstanding waterfalls at Kylesku and close to the Bone Caves. If you walk off the track and follow any burn you will generally find your own waterfall!

There are many terrific places to visit in the area, guide books in each of the houses recommend days out and for further details there is also the well equipped Tourist Information Office in the village. Or just go out, explore, immerse yourself in the highlands and enjoy.

Fishing and Mooring
Both are available by arrangement. There is a 'running mooring' at Ardmair which is suitable for a small boat and is the ideal location to moor your craft ready for exploring the coast. Fishing is available either from the sandy shores or with the use of a boat on Loch Luragainn, brown trout are the likely catch!

DIRECTIONS
Runie Lodge is situated 7 miles north of Ullapool; follow the A835 until you reach Strathkanaird, approximately 100 yards after the village sign turn left into a single track road to Blughasary. Runie Lodge is 150 yards along the track and is the first large white house.
