From the Gaelic for little bay, is known as the “gateway to the isles” as it is from here that ferries run to many of the inner and outer Hebridean islands such as Lismore, Mull, Iona, Colonsay, Tiree, Barra and the Uists.

The town is situated on the west coast of Scotland famed for its mild temperate climate and generous quantities of rain. It started out as a small fishing village and, with the coming of the railway at the end of the 19th century, put it firmly on the tourist map for visitors to come and appreciate the magnificent natural scenery on offer.
