Location
Your Perthshire holiday cottages near the village of Killin are well situated for exploring The Trossachs, the Glencoe and Ben Nevis areas, yet they are less than 2 hours drive from Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Oban.

Attractions
Killin Highland Lodges lie 1 mile north of Killin in West Perthshire, in woodland below the Tarmachan and Ben Lawer's range of mountains in the ancient district of Breadalbane. They are at the site of a "sheiling" which is where the women and children of the village used to live with the cattle in the summer to let them feed on the sweet mountain grass, returning to the village for the winter months.

The lodges sit on a flat shelf looking out over fields to the mountains on the far side of Loch Tay. There are large lawned areas on site and they are surrounded by wooded hillside which is ideal for walking.

The stream running down the west edge of the site has some good picnic areas along side it higher up the hill, but is safely fenced off within the lodges area, so children can play safely.

Killin Golf Course extends to just opposite the Lodges and the village, just over 1 mile away, can be seen nestling in the valley below.

Killin is a delightful, unspoiled highland village which spans the banks of the River Dochart close to where it spills into Loch Tay. As it runs through the village, the river scrambles over large rocks forming the renowned Falls of Dochart.

Killin is steeped in history and Celtic legend, and has the Breadalbane Folk Museum and the restored Moirlanich Longhouse, which both give fascinating insight into the social history of the area.

There is a good variety of shopping in the village with grocers, newsagent, post office, florist, greengrocer, outdoor shop, antique shop, ironmonger, butcher as well as several gift shops, coffee shops and a great choice of Restaurants.

At Killin Highland Lodges children are free to enjoy the fresh air and to wander up the hill to play in the woods - even grown ups enjoy climbing trees! However, for younger children we advise adult supervision, and even older children should not wander too far unaccompanied.

Quieter moments often mean the chance of seeing wild rabbit, red squirrel or deer, and on occasion a pine marten, and the stream running down the hillside has several small pools where paddling and splashing is great fun. In warm weather the loch too can be inviting for a paddle.

Outdoor Activities
In Killin, Breadalbane Park has tennis courts, bowling and putting green as well as swings, roundabouts and climbing frames. Equipment can be hired out during the summer and there is a clubhouse with changing rooms which visitors are welcome to use.

Cycling
The National Cycle network - which makes safe cycling for all the family - passes through Killin (Sustran Route No 7) and on through quiet Glens and little used routes. There are also designated cycle tracks through nearby forest parks and Forest Enterprise has way-marked cycle routes through many of its woodlands. This all makes for very safe cycling for family outings.

Bike hire and route suggestions are available from Killin Outdoor Centre in the village, or from Perthshire Mountain Bikes at Aberfeldy or Freespirits at Aberfeldy.

Fishing
Perthshire has more miles of riverbank than any other county, and combining this with its many lochs and lochans, it is hardly surprising that fishing is one of the main attractions to the area.

With the Rivers Lochay and Dochart flowing into Loch Tay at Killin, and the River Tay, the longest in Scotland, leaving it at Kenmore, opportunities for river or loch fishing abound close to Killin Highland Lodges.

Boats can be hired at several locations around the loch and equipment and tuition can be found just a mile from the lodges at Killin Outdoor Centre. (They also will advise on walking, mountain biking, canoeing, rafting and cross country skiing in the local area)

Hill Walking and Mountaineering
We keep a list of some good local walks available for you in the Lodges as well as Ordnance Survey Maps which you are invited to borrow during your stay. If you enjoy walking there are walks to suit everyone, from gentle strolls which are pushchair friendly (some originally designed for Queen Victoria), to challenging hill walking and Munros.

Killin Highland Lodges sit at the base of the Tarmachan Mountains and a gate at the back of the Lodge gives you easy access. The nearby Lawers Visitor Centre provides information and route maps. The Killin Outdoor Centre in the village is also a great place to get advice on local walking, cycling and waters ports.
