Grantown-on-Spey
A local landowner, Sir James grant laid out Grantown on the wooded banks of the river Spey in 1776. He planned it as a centre of the Highland Linen industry, but it became one of Scotland's leading inland holiday resorts, and centre of the Whisky Trail.

It is a town of broad streets, and most of its older buildings are of granite. The Spey and its tributary, the Dulnain, are world renowned salmon and trout streams, and the slopes of the Cairngorm Mountains outside the town draw skiers and mountaineers from all over Britain.

Much of Speyside's mixed woodland is one of the last remnants of the ancient forest of Caledon, that once covered the whole of Scotland.

Higher up the slopes you will find many species of wildflowers beneath the heather moors. Bird watchers too come from miles to catch a glimpse of the Ospreys and their young nesting in the Abernethy Forest near Loch Garten.

For the golfing enthusiast there is an excellent local course, and a further 6 courses in Badenoch and Strathspey District.

From Grantown excursions north to Inverness and the Black Isle, west to Loch Ness and Fort William or east to Aberdeen and Balmoral are all within a day's drive.
