Antonine Wall Cottages Accommodation

We have two cottages and also our listed Georgian Mansion House available at certain times of the year only. Our cottages are elegantly and comfortably furnished. We have been awarded 4 stars by The Scottish Tourist Board every year since we opened in 2004(representing an excellent standard of accommodation).

The cottages were converted from a listed 1840s stable block. Internally they are light, bright, white and modern while retaining lots of original features such as the 4 foot wide walls and striking double-height ceilings.

There are 2 double bedrooms in Hayloft and a double sofa bed for alternative sleeping arrangements. Doocot has a double and a triple bedroom with 3 single beds and there is also a very comfortable sofa-bed for 2 in the conservatory .

We can convert the twin bedded room in Doocot to a super king bed if required. All beds have orthopaedic mattresses and good quality bed linens.

Doocot cottage is a bit bigger than Hayloft and is ideal for families with children as it overlooks the play area and woods. Doocot also has a lovely conservatory with floor to ceiling windows to take full advantage of the lovely views. Hayloft is perfect for one or two couples or a small family, nature lovers will like it as it overlooks a wood filled with squirrels and birds.

There are areas with outdoor seating for both cottages. These seating areas overlook woods, fields and in the distance the Ochil hills and the Trossachs - just the place for enjoying an evening glass of wine!

Both cottages feature:
· well-equipped kitchens with stainless steel appliances including dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven and hob, coffee makers, iron and ironing board
· feature or four poster beds in master bedroom
· large lounges with comfortable leather sofas, local artwork, books including the latest bestsellers, magazines, games, excellent tourist information, colour television with DVD and video player and a good selection of DVD's.
· 120 channels of TV with SKY freesat , Doocot has full SKY service including movies and sports
· free wi-fi access for WI-FI enabled laptops using our wifi signal. Due to the thick walls this is usually available in the garden or garden room only. We also supply dongles on a PAYG basis
· bathrooms with shower, shaver-point, candles and bubblebath, no charge for towels
· fully controllable electric heating and hot water with timers
· a cot and high chair that can be provided at no charge
· outdoor picnic benches and additional benches
· Sun loungers available for those warm sunny days
· views of woods, fields and hills from every window (and local wildlife, squirrels, deers, cows, geese, swans, badgers)

We are open all year round. From June to the end of August we normally take full week Saturday to Saturday booking in the cottages, the rest of the year we are happy to take short breaks.

Disabled Access
The cottages are suitable for disabled visitors and have been built with the needs of wheelchair users in mind. One cottage is equipped to Visit Scotland Grade 3 level standards - here you can park just outside the entrance door, there are no internal or external steps and the bathroom and doors have been specially adapted to allow wheelchair access. There are bath grab-rails and a specially adapted toilet seat available.

Pet Policy
Dogs welcome.

Our cottages are just perfect for dogs or those who enjoy a good walk -you can walk along the line of the ancient Antonine Wall for miles and it's right on your doorstep. Or if you prefer water views we have a lovely loch within a 5 minute walk.

We have a lovely play area , surrounded by fields with cows and the occasional deer and hare. The play area has a giant trampoline, play-house, swings, slide, climbing ropes and sandpits, and there are also picnic benches for you to sit on while watching the children enjoy themselves.

There is also a detached games cabin with a wii and an xbox 360 complete with lots of games. There is foosball and a pool table and to complete the relaxation opportunities there is a hot tub on the deck just outside the games cabin. This cabin and hot tub can be booked for private exclusive use throughout your stay just book using the booking form.

Take advantage of our outdoor relaxation area and spend some precious hours with your friends and family watching the stars from the hot tub, relaxing in the sauna or playing with your children in our all year round heated swimming pool. Added in 2008 is our lovely Barbeque hut- now you can have a barbie whatever the weather!

Luxury Spa Area - Please note that there is an additional charge for the use of this area.
Overlooking the Antonine Wall and in complete privacy we have an 8 seater top-of-the-range Hot Spring spa. Featuring lights, fountains and plentiful massage jets the hot tub is complete heaven after a busy day walking or sightseeing.

The sauna - a large 8 seater sauna with attached relaxation area with books, candles and mineral water.

A 20 foot exercise pool, constantly heated every day of the year to 32C in Summer and 35C in Winter this provides a wonderful area in which to swim outdoors. The pool has a powerful counter current that you swim
against. Or with the current switched off the pool provides an area to teach youngsters to swim in - far less frightening than a big noisy splashy pool, or it is ideal to play games or just relax.

Fitted with underwater lights it can be used at anytime day or night and heated to 35C in the winter you can swim surrounded by snow!

The hot tub, pool and sauna are installed in an outdoor decked area complete with loungers, tables and chairs, music, fairy lights and candles. This area is completely private and not overlooked by either cottage or our house - or anyone else's house!

We have converted the 1820s greenhouse into a party room with kitchen and large seating area, just in case it happens to rain in Scotland! The hot tub, sauna, pool, decked area and garden room can be booked by our guests and offers a wonderful place to hold family reunions or special parties.

Photographs really don't convey the space, tranquillity and privacy of this area.

Activities and Attractions
You will find a self-catering holiday at Antonine Wall Cottages an excellent location from which to explore some of the finest tourist attractions in Scotland. If a day without any driving appeals, you can walk to the Falkirk Wheel along the line of the ancient Military Way that the Romans built behind the Antonine Wall itself.

The Falkirk Wheel, the world's only rotating boat lift, was opened only 5 years ago and quite rightly is a top Scottish tourist attraction. The Falkirk Wheel offers the only rotating boat-lift in the world and is a wonderful day out with bikes to hire, an enormous children’s play area, a restaurant and excellent display area as well as the Wheel itself to ride on.

The Antonine Wall is the most Northerly frontier built by the Romans almost 2000 years ago and is, according to the guide book Scotland Recommended, our “least exploited treasure”. It is a World Heritage Site.

Alternatively you can enjoy the numerous walks from our doorstep along the Antonine Wall, Rough Castle and by the Forth & Clyde Canal, where you can also rent kayaks and bikes. Our local town, Bonnybridge, complete with shops and friendly pubs serving meals, is a one-mile walk from the cottages.

There is a loch, St Helens Loch, with free fishing just a 5 minute walk from the cottages where you can catch pike and trout.

The City of Edinburgh with its castle, the glorious Princess Street and numerous free museums is easily reachable via a 30-minute train or car journey. The City of Glasgow which is renowned for its excellent shopping and architecture (the Mackintosh Trail is highly recommended) is also 30 minutes by car or frequent train.

Stirling with the Wallace Monument and castle (arguably the best in Scotland – I think it is!) is 15 minutes away by car. If you wish a day on the coast you can reach the picturesque beaches of Fife or Rabbie Burns’ country of Ayrshire within an hour. The Trossachs, Peebles, Perth, Loch Lomond, and New Lanark are all within one hour’s drive of the cottages.

Even the ski slopes of Aviemore, the delights of the Isle of Arran or the children’s television town of Balamory (actually Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, of course) are also perfectly reachable in a day trip.

We can also arrange horse riding at the nearby stables, mountain bikes delivered to your cottages or even you very own skippered luxury boat on Loch Lomond for the day.

In each of the cottages you’ll find extensive tourist information including full details of 10 days out easily visited from our cottages and all personally vetted by your hosts. In these information packs we tell you the best places to eat, the best place to park, where to shop for the best bargains and so on. You will never lack for things to do in this part of Scotland - your only problem will be fitting them all in!
