Attractions and Activities
The city of Edinburgh is often voted by its residents as' the best place to live in Britain'. Dramatic contours, long surviving buildings, breathtaking views, green hills, wide water and a manageable sized city centre have encouraged a truly cosmopolitan population that has produced a diverse cultural identity.

The city is a thrilling place! Culminating in August's festival it offers year-round, sophisticated entertainment in hundreds of small performance venues.

The castle, King Arthur's seat and a labyrinth of tunnels and dungeons provide similar excitement for history buffs whilst those simply looking for a place to shop in fine style will not be disappointed either. There is a constant, inexplicable air of romance within this ancient city that entices visitors to return to this beautiful place time and again.

Edinburgh Castle is visited annually by approximately one million people - if we except the Tower of London that is more people than visit any other ancient monument in the United Kingdom. Every visitor - particularly those on a restricted itinerary - should visit the Castle, not only because of the historical interest of this remarkable fortress and former royal residence, but because it offers such splendid panoramic views of the city.

It is from these battlements, for example, that the traveller immediately appreciates the dramatic topography of Edinburgh, situated between sea and hills.

Within the confines of the Castle, there is much to see. It was the seat (and regular refuge) of Scottish Kings, and the historical apartments include the Great Hall, which now houses an interesting collection of weapons and armour.

The Royal apartments include a tiny room in which Mary, Queen of Scots gave birth to the boy who was to become King James VI of Scotland and James 1 of England upon the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603.

Edinburgh is full of activities for every traveller, Culture & Entertainment!

Shopping
Edinburgh has it all - friendly little boutiques, the traditional, the new, the expected and the unexpected. Edinburgh has it all with regard to shopping: department stores, friendly little boutiques, the traditional, the new, the expected and the unexpected.

Princes Street is the location for Scotland's most famous shop, Jenners (the oldest independent department store in the world), which has a fabulous food hall. The main modern shopping centres are Cameron Toll Centre, 6 Lady Road, and the Waverley Shopping Centre on also on Princes Street.

The Royal Mile , on the other hand, is scattered with off-beat stores and souvenir sellers. Nearby Grassmarket (a trading place since 1477) and Victoria Street are packed with arts and crafts shops, bookshops and specialist food stores. Some of the city's smartest designer stores, such as Escada, are along George Street in the New Town.

In general, shops are open 0900-1730, with late-night shopping on Thursday until 1930 or 2000. Sunday opening is increasingly popular, particularly among the larger stores.

Festivals

Hogmanay is the Scottish New Year, celebrated on 31st December every year. Never being slow to spot a good excuse for a party, the night involves a celebratory drink or two, fireworks and the kissing of complete strangers - not necessarily in that order.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay has been ranked as one of the top ten spots across the world to celebrate New Years Eve.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival
The Fringe Festival tends to be more off beat than the main festival and is made up of all manner of professional and amateur performers. As a result it tends to appeal to a younger audience.

The Fringe side of the Edinburgh Festival is now regarded by the stage industry as so cutting edge and innovative that it is viewed by many as a showcase for new talent.

The Film Festival also dates back to 1947 and so is the oldest such festival in the world. It is now an established part of the film industry's calendar and features both mainstream and independent films.
