Castle Douglas hotelCroys is an elegant Georgian House dating from the 18th century, and was featured in the November 2004 issue of 'Period House’ magazine, and also in ‘Scotland on Sunday'.

The house is part Georgian and part Victorian, and is situated in an elevated position in the Urr Valley in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south west Scotland.

Run by Pat and Alan Withall, the property is bounded on the southern side by the River Urr. Through time they intend to open the river, which was fished in days gone by, but hasn’t been touched for several years.
It is known that the upper reaches yield salmon as well as sea trout and brown trout. The house lies in 35 acres of parkland and gardens and has a well established topiary and walled garden, where fresh fruit and vegetables are grown.

Croys Accommodation

Accommodation at Croys consists of 2 double rooms and one twin room. The larger double room is very spacious, and enjoys expansive views over the garden and countryside beyond. It is traditionally decorated in keeping with the rest of the house, having a marble fireplace, free-standing antique furniture and original ceramic wash basin.

The adjoining private en suite facilities include bath, shower, wash hand basin and toilet.

The second double room is also decorated in keeping with the age of the house and boasts an attractive four-poster bed and other period furniture to add to our guest’s comfort. This room shares the same garden views as the other double room.

The adjoining twin room is brightly decorated and has two single antique French beds. Both these rooms have their own wash basin, and also share a private bathroom and separate toilet.

If required, a 7th person may be accommodated in a fold-away Z-bed which may be set up in a bedroom or in the lounge. All bed linen (duvets) and towels are provided, and a cot is available on request.

All bedrooms have tea and coffee-making facilities. Both double bedrooms also have a TV. Prices are for Bed and Full Breakfast, and include VAT where appropriate. Evening meals are available by arrangement.

Additional Facilities
The cosy sitting room is equipped with a wood-burning stove (logs are supplied at cost, first supply is free). There is a television and DVD player, and French doors lead out to the front of the property. The spacious kitchen/dining area is bathed in a plentiful supply of natural light from the overhead windows, and there are French doors leading out to the garden.

The modern well-equipped kitchen includes a washing machine, dishwasher, electric oven and hob, microwave oven, kettle, toaster and all crockery and cutlery. Tea towels are also provided.

The Guest Rooms at Croys.
Croys has many attractive south-facing rooms with original fine plaster work, Delft tiles in the original fireplaces and many little treasures such as the Victorian blue washhand basin in one of the washrooms and the fully functioning array of servants' bells.

The house is centrally heated, however in cold weather it is particularly cosy with log fires burning in all the public rooms.

The ground floor has a large comfortable lounge with open Victorian fireplace, baby grand piano which guests are welcome to use, TV, and a large bay window overlooking the sunken garden. Breakfast (and evening meal if requested) is served in the formal dining room, which has French windows leading out to the sunken garden surrounded by topiary.

The large reception area leads through to the hall where an elegant and unusual wrought iron spiral staircase leads to the bedrooms.

Pat is an excellent cook, and uses produce from the gardens to provide a fine breakfast, and exquisite evening meal if required. Vegetarian meals are available on request.

The gardens are an especially wonderful aspect to this house, sporting walls festooned with wisteria, clematis, Virginia creeper and honeysuckle. During the spring and early summer the grounds are carpeted with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells and the various seating areas will tempt guests to spend many leisurely hours relaxing in this tranquil and most beautiful location.

There is a purpose built brick barbeque tastefully sited to the front of the house with seating for outside meals.

From Dumfries, head westwards along the A75. A couple of miles after the village of Springholm, turn right onto the B794 (signposted for Corsock).
