Kilmichael Country House Hotel Accommodation

All the rooms are elegantly and individually decorated to retain the look and feel of a particularly attractive country house, while still offering the standards of comfort and service associated with the best hotels.

The Forest Room
A beautiful spacious room with a large romantic 4-poster bed and a jacuzzi bath big enough for two.

The Rose Bedroom
Originally the principal bedroom of the house, it has a draped bed and a large light bathroom.

Grizel’s Room
Named for the wife of the owner in 1681. A beautiful single room with a sleigh bed and en suite bathroom.

The Garden Suite
The private sitting room overlooks the garden through three west-facing windows. The bedroom has a mahogany four-poster.

The Fullarton Suite
Double doors divide the elegant bedroom, with a draped bed, from the private sitting room. The small bathroom was originally the butler's pantry.

We also have more rooms in The Stable Court a beautifully restored stone-built stable and coach house in the garden.

All the rooms at Kilmichael are furnished and equipped to the highest standards. All have both bath and shower en suite.

Each has a telephone, television, cd player, clock radio, tea tray and hairdryer, as well as an iron, shoe-cleaning kit, books of local interest, an Ordnance Survey map of the island and a folder of useful local information. All bedrooms except the Fullarton Suite are on the ground floor.

All beds except twins and the single are "King size" (American "Queen size"). Each room is decorated differently and has fresh flowers, fruit and a wee dram of whisky to welcome you on arrival, as well as a range of toiletries from Crabtree & Evelyn and Arran Aromatics.

A ferry-inclusive tariff is also available.

Please note:
Kilmichael usually operates between March and October and reverts to a private house in the winter, although our self-catering cottages are available all year round.

Dinner
Rates include bed and breakfast. Resident guests are always given priority in our award winning restaurant, but reservations are essential.

Restaurant
The menu in our award-winning restaurant changes every day.
We offer canapés, four courses, petit fours and coffee
for an all inclusive price.

Our dishes are prepared using the finest and freshest of local ingredients wherever possible, including fresh eggs from our own chickens and ducks, home grown herbs, fruit, vegetables and salad leaves from the potager, together with berries and mushrooms gathered in season on the estate.

At dinner all our bread, ice creams and sorbets are home made, as are the jams and marmalade at breakfast and, whenever possible, honey from our own bees.

Speciality Diets
We take pride in providing interesting and delicious vegetarian options as a matter of course. When we are advised, in advance, of serious allergies or intolerances we try our best to take these into account when planning the menu, which changes daily.

We do, however, only serve adult food and are understandably reluctant to modify our entire menu to suit those who were startled by a piece of broccoli as a child!

The dinner menu is available at breakfast every morning. We serve a 'table d'hôte' menu only and so request guests to inform us in advance of any special dietary needs/strong dislikes so that we may be able to accommodate accommodate them in planning for the day.

Child Policy
We regret that the hotel, including the Dining Room, is not suitable for children under the age of 12, although we are happy to welcome children in our self-catering cottages.

Pet Policy
Dogs may be accepted by prior arrangement. They are not permitted in the public rooms and must be kept on a leash in the grounds.

Smoking Policy
In accordance with Scottish law, smoking is not permitted inside the premises.

History
Kilmichael is believed to be the oldest house on the isle of Arran. It is certainly among the richest in its historic associations.

Situated at the heart of grounds granted to the forebears of its builders by King Robert the Bruce in 1307, it occupies a spot known to have been inhabited long before that, indeed the name Kilmichael indicates the site of one of the earliest Christian missionary cells, dedicated to St. Michael.

By the middle of the 16th century there were just two principal landowners on the island, the Dukes of Hamilton at the castle and the Fullartons of Kilmichael. No doubt to reflect the family's prominence, the estate was improved in Victoria's time by the addition of a lodge with gates and, inside the house, a stained glass window depicting the Fullarton coat of arms.

For all its proud history and its description in the title deeds as a fine Scottish Mansion House, it is actually quite small and has a charming intimacy about it which complements these grand associations.
Kilmichael House is listed as a building of historic and architectural significance.
