What to see and do around Banff:
We invite you to come to BANFF to discover the delightful North East area of ABERDEENSHIRE – the forgotten coastline.

The Historic Royal Burgh of BANFF is a treasure trove of GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE.
Boat building, fishing and farming and their associated trades including sawmills, rope and sail works, fish curing, soap and candle works, granaries and the production of bricks and tiles all made up the town of Banff.
Many of the building where these trades took place can still be seen by eagle eyed visitors interested in the history of the area.

The BANFFSHIRE COASTLINE is renowned for its micro-climate and marine heritage. It is a treasure trove for nature lovers, walkers, golfers, fishermen and tourists alike.

The rivers, sandy beaches, rock pools, and farmland all provide a habitat for all sorts of different species of wildlife, flowers, and trees.

There are picturesque and quaint fishing villages, including the 17th century harbour at PORTSOY.
PENNAN (where the film Local Hero was filmed) and its close neighbour CROVIE are perched on the very edge of the sea. CROVIE is perched on a very narrow strip of shore above the sea, and from a distance resembles a lego village. Popular market towns – HUNTLY,TURRIFF and KEITH, are all very interesting to visit and are within an easy drive of Banff.

Let us take the golf courses in the area. There are some 70 courses in the ABERDEEN & GRAMPIAN HIGHLANDS, and a happy holiday can be spent based in BANNFF taking in some of the many within easy driving reach of GARDENIA GUEST HOUSE.

Bird life in abundance can be seen from either a boat trip or the COASTAL TRAIL. A trip out into the MORAY FIRTH can be so exciting when you sight the seals and porpoises in the wild and dolphins frolicking in the waters off shore.

Fishing in the area can be found in many guises, estuaries, fisheries or rivers. The Deveron provides a mix of challenges for beginners and experiences anglers alike.

The River Deveron rises in the high hills above Cabrach and brown and sea trout can be found here as well as salmon, which can be found almost anywhere on the river.

The fisheries are mainly stocked with rainbow trout although you may find yourself netting brook trout or brown trout. For visitors preferring sea angling, villages and picturesque harbours provide this activity.

This North East corner of ABERDEENSHIRE offers a tremendous variety of scenery and walks to match every ones ability.
One of Scotland's newest long distance walking paths was unveiled last March. The Aberdeenshire Coastal Path ran all along Banffshire coast, from Pennan to Cullen. The path is part of the North Sea Trail - a walking route round the whole North Sea, both in Britain and Northern Europe.

The Banffshire section includes narrow, steep cliff paths and main roads. From long distance footpaths and cross country routes, to sand dunes and cliff top trails and moderate level circular walks, where panoramic scenery reward you for very little effort, BANFF is a base for many a pleasurable day out.

A very good leaflet is produced giving full details of walks around Banff and its neighbour MACDUFF. This is available from tourist information or ourselves.

DUFF HOUSE - designed by WILLIAM ADAM, built between 1735-40 was the seat of the Earls of Fife. It is now the focus of arts, craft and culture in the area. It is an outstation of the National Galleries of Scotland and it houses masterpieces by artists such as El Greco and furniture by Chippendale. In addition to the static collection, there is also the touring exhibitions on at regular intervals during the year. The tearoom is popular with its home baking and the gift shop provides a wide range of quality gifts and books. There are extensive grounds and woodland walks by the River Deveron.

The CASTLE TRAIL links together restored family castles and stately homes. There are more castles in Aberdeenshire than any other county in Scotland.Deep in history they are often set in magnificent grounds with beautiful trees and velvety lawns, in fact, having a fairy tale air about them. On the other hand, the castle which are now in ruins are also romantic and seeped in history. Many of the castle listed in "SCOTLAND's CASTLE TRAIL' book are easily got to from BANFF.

And, when we are thinking of places to visit whilst staying in BANFF, lets not forget the WHISKY trail. A warm welcome awaits you at the distilleries where you can see the procedure for making whisky and then enjoy a wee dram before leaving - on to the next one!

As you can see, there is a lot to see and do in the area, and I have not mentioned yet the PUFFIN CRUISES to see the wildlife and bird colonies, dolphins too if you are lucky, and The MACDUFF AQUARIUM where you can see the marine life of the MORAY FIRTH.

BANFF is an ideal base for exploring this region of ABERDEENSHIRE, and we will be delighted to see you at GARDENIA GUESTHOUSE where we will help to make your holiday as enjoyable and memorable as possible.

Some more interesting days out in Banffshire:
For anyone with a creative nature and love of art, the area can provide a GALLERY TRAIL taking in many galleries and enjoying the spectacular scenery at the same time.

From BANFF it is easy to access three of the galleries on the GALLERY TRAIL. In BANFF itself there is DUFF HOUSE, which is a treasure trove of furniture, old masters and stunning Baroque architecture. In addition to the permanent collection regular exhibitions, music and lectures are organised. It is open all year.

Leap Studio & Gallery is situated in Aberlour-on-Spey. LEAP, the design company and gallery is in the heart of Speyside. The property in which it operates has in itself, a distinguished village history.
The building dates back to 1800's when it was owned by wine merchant John McWilliam. The original cellar remains.

In keeping with its history the Gallery has a unique display of whisky related art.

Logie Steading Art Gallery in the Findhorn Valley, south of Forres, was established in 1992 and promotes contemporary Scottish work which appeals to a wide range of people.
Watercolours, oils, prints, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, bronzes, cards and jewellery are all available. In addition there are antiques, secondhand books, painted furniture, dressmaker, farm and garden shop, glass engraving on site, a playground and cafe.
A wonderfully interesting day out as there is so much to see and do.

There are 10 Galleries in total on the Gallery Trail, the others being just a bit further away from Banff.

3. The McEwan Gallery, Royal Deeside
