Sugar Hill Harlem Inn

We invite you to experience a piece of American History. From the forgotten Weckquasgeek Tribe, to the first middle class families that moved to this block in 1906 to the Harlem Renaissance and right up until today.

This part of Harlem breaths history like no other, Sugar Hill. This is after all where Miles Davis came to meet Sonny Rollins and hang out with him, and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd.

The Rooms

We have 2 rooms with private bathroom on the 1st floor. Satchmo’s Room is named for Louis Armstrong. He was born in New Orleans, but he lived the last years of his life in Corona, a working class neighborhood in Queens. He frequently performed in some of the great clubs in Harlem. He was the most respected jazz musician of his era and most probably the greatest horn player in the history of jazz. And so it is fitting that this is the largest room in the house.

This room has a fireplace, original wood floors and oriental rugs, a king size bed, a large bathroom, with separate shower and bathtub. It also comes with an outside deck.

Lena's Room

Lena’s room is the most elaborately designed room in the house. The fireplace and wall are ordained with elaborate molding’s. It is the most feminine and romantic room in the house. The four poster bed with all its gauzy fabrics is very much the center of the room. It comes with a small bathroom, with sink, toilet and shower only. So we jazzed it up with some offbeat tile colors of ruby red and royal blue.

The Studios

We have two studios with private bathrooms and kitchens on the 2nd floor. Miles Room is named for Miles Davis who was an early Sonny Rollins fan and hung out with him and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd that included, Jackie Mclean, Kenny Drew, and Art Taylor. Miles Davis was one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century.

Miles room has a fireplace, original wood floors, oriental rugs, a queen size bed, and a full size kitchen, with stove, fridge and microwave. The bathroom has a shower and bathtub.

The Garden

All our guests are welcome to come sit in our garden. You will be amazed to hear the beautiful bird songs in the early summer evenings. This garden was built by a novice who had never built a garden or anything like this before.

He went into the woods up in the Catskills and spent weeks looking for wild plants, old mossy tree stumps, bits of rotten wood, baby fir trees, firns, ivy, dirt and anything that caught his eye. He also retrieved, old bricks and floor beams from building sites where a building had been torn down. He then brought back all this nature and rearranged it in this garden.

The Apartment

We have one 2 bedroom suite, The Renaissance Suite, named for the black renaissance and cultural revolution Ali's Roomthat toElla's Roomok place in Harlem in the 20's and 30's and was a profound musical, literary and political movement. It is on the top floor. So steps must be your thing as there is no elevator. But it is a nice walk as there is a beam of light bursting through the skylight at the top of the stairs. You enter into Ella’s room with original wood floors and oriental carpets, and a fireplace.

There is a hallway with bare brick walls and skylight. The bathroom is on the left and Ali’s room down the hall to the right. If you are a large party of 4 or more this is the place for you. It is light and airy and you will feel right at home soaking up the history of Harlem right at the top of Sugar Hill.

Billie's Room Billie’s room has wood floors and a king size bed, a large bathroom, with a shower and a Jacuzzi.

Dizzy's Room Dizzy’s room has wood floors and a king size bed, a large bathroom, with a shower and separate tub. There is a skylight in the bathroom.

Marian's Room Marian’s room has wood floors a queen size bed, and a bathroom, with a shower.

Nina's Room Nina’s room has wood floors king size bed and a bathroom with a shower.

Malcom's Room Malcolm’s room is a long narrow room with an archway in the middle and a screen that can be used for added privacy if friends and family wish to share. It is on the same floor as the kitchen and garden. There is a toilet and sink in the kitchen that can be used but there is no shower. This room is often used when another room is being rented upstairs and everyone in the group shares the shower in the room with the shower. This room is therefore less expensive and does not appear on the booking engine. If you are interested please ask about it.
