Your pied a terre on Sugar Hill. The secluded self-contained garden apartment shares the garden floor and private entrance of Jumel Terrace Books, an antiquarian bookshop specializing in Harlem Heights local history from the Revolution through the jazz-age Renaissance to its vibrant present. The townhouse is directly across the street from the Morris-Jumel Mansion, George Washington’s headquarters for 1776's Battle of Harlem Heights and home to the infamous grand horizontal, Madame Jumel.

The apartment features full kitchen and bath (tub and shower), a large bedroom with an antique double bed, a sitting room with single bed/daybed and desk, a rare book store that doubles as your dining are reading room, cable television, internet access, a/c and a full ornamental garden with a gas grill. Wine and dine al fresco on Sunday afternoons as the sounds of Marjorie Elliot’s Parlor Jazz waif from her nearby apartment.

Rooms are furnished in a comfortable, eclectic mix with bookish comforts. The apartment functions for a single, double or triple, complete with a private entrance and garden.

In apartment: entrance shared with bookshop (which doubles as your study and dining room), well appointed garden with grill, firm antique double bed, window seat/single bed, full bath, and kitchen, coffee/tea facilities, welcome food supplies (cereal, fresh gourmet coffee, teas, milk/half and half, fresh fruit), desk amenities, cable television, internet access, a Bose MP3 player and an intense libraries on gardening and New York, particularly Uptown. We pride ourselves on the quality of our mattresses. All bedding has high thread counts, is hypo-allergenic and protected. And – this is new – air-conditioning, not that you’re likely to need it.

Cool in the summer, warm in the winter, this may be the quietest apartment in New York City.

Housekeeping service every 3 to 4 days for long stays and management is on the premises to assist.

On premises: bookstore and library conference rooms, reference libraries, parlor and garden party rentals, computer, printer, internet service, laundry service, piano, telephone, cable television, lp, cd and mp3 players. There is a parlor floor gallery and dining room and a large library suitable for meetings, lectures, photo shoots, and exhibitions. Inquire for costs.

Tours: Our black on black 1976 Checker Marathon, with driver/tour guide, is available for motor-touring New York City for an additional fee.

By Car

Head northwest, continue straight onto LaGuardia Access Rd, take the ramp on the left onto Grand Central Pkwy. Merge onto Grand Central Pkwy, Continue onto I-278 E, Take exit 46 toward Manhattan/Randalls Is, continue onto Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. Take the 2 Avenue exit toward Harlem River Dr N/125 Street. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Harlem Riv Dr/126 Street and merge onto 2nd Avenue. Take the ramp on the left onto Harlem River Drive. Take exit 21 for East 135 Street toward Madison Avenue Bridge. Merge onto East 135th Street. Turn right onto Saint Nicholas Avenue. Turn right onto West 160th Street. Destination will be on the right. Travel time will be 30 minutes.

By Subway

From LaGuardia Airport, take a walk to LaGuardia Internal Roadway/Terminal B. Take M60-SBS towards West Side Bway – 106 Street which will take 8 stops. Drop by West 125 St/Fred Douglass Bl and walk towards 125 Street and take subway towards Inwood – 207 Street which will take 4 stops. Drop by at 163 St - Amsterdam Avenue and walk towards Jumel Terrace Bed and Breakfast. Head southeast on West 162nd Street toward Saint Nicholas Avenue. Turn right onto Saint Nicholas Avenue. Turn left onto West 160th Street. Destination will be on the left. Travel time will be 1 hour.

From Newark Liberty International Airport

By Car

Head southeast, Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Parking A/Parking B/Parking C. Slight left toward Newark International Airport Street. Keep left at the fork to continue toward I-78 E. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Interstate 78 E/Interstate 95/New Jersey Turnpike/Holland Tunnel/New York City. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for I-78 E/I-95/U.S. 1-9 N and merge onto I-78 E. Take the exit toward Interstate 95 N/NJ Turkpike N/Interstate 95 S/NJ Turnpike S. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Interstate 95 N and merge onto I-95 N. Keep left at the fork to stay on I-95 N, follow signs for Toll Plaza EZPass. Take the exit to stay on I-95 N toward US-46/Fort Lee/G Washington Bridge. Keep right at the fork to stay on I-95 N, follow signs for George Washington Bridge/Fort Lee. Continue onto U.S. 1 N/U.S. 9 N. Continue onto I-95 Lower Level N/US-1 Lower Level N. Take exit 2 on the left for Harlem Riv Dr toward FDR Dr/Manhattan. By Subway

From Newark Liberty International Airport, proceed to AirTrain Newark P4. Take subway towards AirTrain Newark Liberty International and walk towards Newark Airport Railroad Station. Take subways towards Northeast Corridor towards New York Penn Station which will take 3 stops. Drop by at New York Penn Station and take a walk to 34 St - Penn Station and take a bus towards 168 Street which will take 15 stops. Drop by at 163 St - Amsterdam Avenue and walk to Jumel Terrace Bed and Breakfast. Head southeast on West 162nd Street toward Saint Nicholas Avenue. Turn right onto Saint Nicholas Avenue.
