Places to stay in Salcombe

There are numerous tidal creeks around this long established haven for yachtsmen, together these and Salcombe's fine natural harbour make it a favoured holiday destination for all who enjoy 'messing around in boats' along fascinating, tranquil waterways and on the sea. Salcombe is fortunate to enjoy a mild climate all the year round which is perhaps why, whatever the season, there is always a riot of colourful flowers and plants in bloom. In the sea there is a wealth of fish life, basking sharks as well as Dolphins can often be seen in the surrounding waters. Even if you were not told, looking around at the gleaming coastal waters offset by stunningly beautiful cliffs backed by fresh green fields and picturesque meadows, you would know immediately that this is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Utterly unspoilt, this enchanting town is crammed with holiday makers all summer long, when the sea and the estuary becomes a forest of vibrant coloured boats and yachts with slender masts showing graceful, billowing sails. The old streets around the town have a delightful mixture of attractive properties in a wide range of architectural styles. There are pleasing shops, gift and art galleries and tempting antique markets. Restaurants and welcoming inns abound, all offer a varied selection of tasty, fresh locally caught fish and mouth watering seafood. Salcombe is a pleasant town with a happy atmosphere making it a joy to explore when you tire of lazing on one of the beautiful sandy beaches or need to relax after an energetic morning at sea. Looking around, the pleasant, typically English scene we see today, is a far cry from June 4, 1944, when thousands of American soldiers left these shores to take part in the D-Day landings. The town is proud of the part it played in this important phase of World War II and there is a commemorative plaque in Normandy Way. A highlight in Salcombe's social calendar is a regatta and fishing contest when everyone turns out to cheer on the winner. Other local events include; the South Pool Fete, Hope Cove Weekend and the Salcombe Festival. These are but a few of the events and attractions provided for the benefit of residents and visitors and nearby Kingsbridge (easily reached by Ferry) offers a Fair Week, Illuminated Carnival and an annual Show.
