The Hanging Tree Wines Vineyard is perched on the most scenic ridge of Pokolbin in the sensational Hunter Valley, an easy 2 hour drive from Sydney and 45 minutes from Newcastle.

Hanging Tree Wines covers 40 magnificent acres; 8 of which are planted with Shiraz, Cabernet, Semillon, and Chardonnay vines. Our olive groves stretch around the crown of the hill and look over the valley to uninterrupted views of the Brokenback Range.

See the rustic Blacksmith's house as you enter the front gates and our historic Hanging Tree, which was rumoured to have hung beasts and bush-rangers in the early days of settlement. Follow the path down past our sea of rose beds, where to the left you can see the old Horse Whisperer's Lodge and pond. Step back in time as you walk into our Cellar Door - housed within an old cow shed filled with nick-knacks and antiques. Taste some of our award winning wines and wander around our stunning property.

The Hunter Valley is a must on the annual to do list. The quality of the many vineyards and their Cellar Doors, the gourmet restaurants, galleries, antique shops and selection of championship golf courses make this location a world class lifestyle experience.

The Homestead

A 40 acre vineyard – and comfortably sleeps 8-10 across the 4 suites.

Our commitment has always been to making high quality hand-crafted wines. From hand-harvested low yield vineyards to a wine making process that is a mix of old and true methods with the best of the new.

Our range consists of a variety of different wines to suit all palates. All created in our fruit driven style and easy drinking for all occasions.

Vineyard and Cellar Door

The Hanging Tree property consists of 40 undulating acres, eight of which are under four vine varieties like Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are over 15 years old, with our Shiraz vines the oldest at 40 -45 years. This coupled with the rich clay soil has contributed to the success of our award winning wines.

The Hanging Tree Cellar Door (once a cow shed) is packed with antiques and vintiques and warmly welcomes all with its rustic charm. If you are lucky, you might be greeted at the front gate by our welcoming party, Vodka - our residential golden Labrador! Our cellar door is open for tastings Friday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Or mid-weeks by appointment.

Plane

Cessnock Airport is the nearest gateway in the region that offers charter and helicopter flights only. Visitors from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane can take a flight going to Newcastle Airport for approximately an hour. Newcastle Airport which serves domestic flights is the second convenient gateway to reach Cessnock for an hour drive.

Trains and Buses

Take a train from Sydney Central going either to the stations in Maitland, Morisette or Newcastle. These three stations has connecting coaches going to Hunter Valley, Cessnock. Travel duration depends on the station prefered by passengers. It is advisable to check train timetables to plan ahead your journey.

Car

There are various routes from Sydney that could take you to Cessnock and the Hunter Valley Region. Drive north to Sydney Harbour Bridge and continue to the National Highway. Take the M1-Pacific Motorway going towards Newcastle and take the exit Freemans Drive- B 82 and continue to O'Connors Rd in Pokolbin. Visitors who are opt for wine tasting must have a reliable driver since the country has strict drinking laws that are policed throughout the region.
